Tigerlilly...so what if a Chihuahua costs over £1000 and is a pedigree/non rescue? I could afford to buy mine so i did, and like ive said before i have had rescue animals before and not just dogs. I dont like the derogatory tone you took about the breed. I find my dog a VERY easy dog to have and definately not stubborn or overly excitable! She is almost 4. My friends Chihuahuas are the same, and they are not from the same line. They make excellent pets. It just depends what breed of dog suits you etc.

I don't see anything particularly offensive about what Tigerlilly wrote about Chi's and she took the time to explain that in fact she has nothing against them and her own experiences with them as a breed. Nothing more.
Unlike me who actually wholeheartedly dislike them and can't think of a single redeeming feature for the breed... But then again there are plenty of other breeds I don't like either, Chi's are not the only ones I dislike :) (Infact on this board I have mentioned before my lack of enthusiasm for poodles).
Then again I am sure plenty of other people dislike not only my cats but also my slightly insane GSD/BC cross who appears to be crossed with a hippo, a kangaroo and something on speed...

Now can we get back to talking about Chaya :) I still wanna see a picture!

It doesn't matter that they would be over £1k unless you're about to be evicted with 50k + debts & no money to even feed yourself, was just warning her nothing more, she has no idea on the cost

Yeah i'll get a cam phone on 16th, she tried to run at the cat today but I had her collar & the cat was in her pen so she didn't get far lol they're doing ok tho, the cat is moving about more now. She's doing her kong right now, if she stops grunting enough to eat! She met the woman who's taking her on Saturday today & was all over her, she'll have a great time. This woman suggested she might have Whippet in her (They all think she has Whiippet legs!)

And you're right Mrs T I have nothing against Chi's I love animals, I just don't think they're the right breed for this girl & she had no idea of the cost so I pointed out to her they might be more than she thinks & maybe a rescue would be best. She also wouldn't be good with a Puppy but does that mean i'm putting Pups down? NO! Just HER & PUPS together.

Chaya is doing me good we keep finding new places to walk. Thanks also to the poster somewhere above for that charity site!
  • Hope all is well - When are you getting her washed?

When I rescued my last dog I had to wash her the first day as she had been abandoned in a dirty pen with another dog and I could not stand the smell! _pale_

I used a big jug and washed her in the bath and she was fine, but I know what you mean about letting the groomer do it the first time if you are unsure!

How are you finding new dog ownership? I imagine its still a bit stressful at times with it being early days, but I hope you are enjoying having her and your walks together. I met a little brindle staffy x whippet last week and I llook forward to seeing Chaya to see what she looks like!

Some have suggested Whippet! She always holds her tail down & it tapers off quite thin & she has quite a long body I think tho that might look longer with her being thin, but she's not too thin just needs to gain some. I might get her some dog shampoo & try but then I can imagine her running about drenched & shivering while she drys off.

She'll go on 17th cause she's got the Vet on 16th, I hope her lumps are harmless. She's doing really well, the Cat will come out when she knows it's safe & the dog tries to chase if she moves fast but otherwise is good, when she first came she had that Terrier excitement shaking going on, now she doesn't do it or whine. Even the Rats she ignores!

I'm calmer now! If the Cat was gonna leave home I think she would've by now & also she still goes pretty much all where she did before, she just doesn't walk about freely but hardly did anyway she's lazy! The Dogs still being great, still no accidents, makes me wonder if she has an Owner looking for her somewhere

I mean she's sorta trained abit & obviously house trained, not destructive etc so why is she a stray? I did have a dream that the free paper came & her pic was on it as a Wanted ad by her real Owners saying she'd gone missing (Even using the Pixie name, which her real Owners woudn't know cause the kennels called her it!) & that she was Border Collie x Staff lol well idk what she is but she isn't Collie! (Waits for you all to see the pic & say she is!)

I rang the kennels & told them. I'm wondering if it was another thread somewhere about an adoption & the kids going back to their real Parents or not? lol

She's awesome tho & on Saturday will get to run off lead finally which she'll love with all the smells of foxes & rabbits & idk what!
  • you know, I think thats a common worry when you adopt a dog. When I was a kid I desperately wanted a dog, and when one was abandoned on the field in front of our house we spent a week trying to catch her. Eventually the rspca managed to catch her, so she did her week in kennels, no-one claimed her, and we had her. I remember I used to have sleepless nights that someone would claim her or take her away, and once this boy told me that a woman had said she was her dog and she wanted her back, so I was really worried!

Needless to say, no one ever claimed her, and it turned out she had broken teeth all down one side of her mouth and some pretty strange fears, so i guess she had been knocked about before we got her.

My first dog as an adult, Che, was owned by a friend of mines neighbours, and lived in a pen at the bottom of the garden. The owners split up and moved out. Their son returned for the other dog, and the dad was supposed to be taking the little terrier, however, my friend (who was in all day due to ill health) became concerned that no-one was feeding her, so we started getting food and water to her. After a week, when no-one had returned to feed her, I rang the rspca who said they could no nothing as she had food and water! So I decided to liberate her, and take her to a dog shelter myself. However, when I got her out she was such a soft, afectionate little dog that I could not do it, so she lived with me for the next ten years. Again, I worried that the bloke may come and have a go at me for taking her and demand her back, but I guess he wasnt that bothered.

When I got Badger she had been handed into rescue, had a patchy shaved coat and overgrown claws. However, she had been well trained at some point, so I cant work out if her owners just lost interest, or if she had had a good caring owner at some time in her past who had perhaps died and she had been passsed on to people who didnt care for her.

When my mum saw her dog she had not completed her week in kennels after the dog warden had found her straying. She is a stunning looking young dog - I mean she is unusual and very attractive with striking gold eyes, and my mum very often gets stopped by people to ask what breed she is and whether she will breed her (x-breed and nope being the answers!). I fully expected her owners to come forard, but none did. I really thought someone would be looking for her so I scoured the web and local paprs looking for a 'dog lost' ad looking for her, but there were none - presumably no-one wanted her back.

When I found those two gentle oldies a couple of months ago, I put cards in every local shop in a five mile radius and posted their found details all over the internet - I fully expected someone to ring to say they had wondered off their garden - no one called me, they must have been dumped.

I have to say, I think if anyone was looking or your dog they would have found her before now - my old dog escaped a couple of times and took herself off on a walk - soon I realised she used to go to the chippy to look for left-overs!! (she was a streetwise little thing and had been starved in the past), but the first time she did it, I rang the police, dog warden etc imediately and would have rung all the local kennels and pounds if she hadnt turned up.

Your dog was in kennels for several weeks if they had wanted to find her they would have had ample opportunity - I think its safe to say they had decided to get rid, and if its in a village that re-inforces that - if she had belonged to someone in the village they would have known about her, but lots of people from cities seem to dump dogs in more rural areas with some sort of misguided idea that they will be able to fend for themselves better there!

Who knows why such nice dogs get dumped - maybe a new baby, a new partner, or money worries. There is no excuse, but it happens all the time!

The local kennels intake has gone up threefold, and the number of reclaims has dropped to less than 1 in 10, sadly.

  • She's awesome tho & on Saturday will get to run off lead finally which she'll love with all the smells of foxes & rabbits & idk what!

Is that with the lady who is looking after her for you? Does she have an enclosed area to let her run in? I just ask because otherise I would be very wary about her letting her off lead as she does not know the lady yet - I always think a dog should be with someone for at least 2 weeks before you let it off lead anywhere open.

ETA - sorry, I just realised my last post was the longest post in the world! lol

The thing that worried me with Diggs was that he may have been stolen and then dumped and thats why his previous owners hadnt found him.

I kept looking at doglost website in case someone was searching for him. It would have broken our hearts to part with him but if he was someones much loved dog, how could we not hand him over. I couldnt understand at all how he could be dumped wandering the streets because he is such a loving and obedient dog, he never strays, even when he is off lead and running he keeps looking back to make sure of where we are and he comes at the slightest whistle or call. One day he must have whipped out the front door whilst I was putting stuff in the bin. About half an hour later, I thought, where is he? I called him and heard a frantic scratching on the front door, opened it and he shot in like a bullet so relieved, wagging and kissing me - he must have been following me and wondered why I closed the door on him. This is not a dog who would have wandered off.
  • oh bless, my Badger is like that too, so loyal, I dont know how anyone could have driven off and left her.

What sort of a dog is Diggs?
