my chickens didn't touch the potatoe plants so I reckon you are safe.... but.... (and there is always a but!!).. when the sets were first planted.. the chickens thought the bare soil was great for digging in and dustbathing in

That's good to know, I'll give it a try then. As many of you know I tend to think if there's one crop that I would be inclined to buy it's main crop potatoes, only becauce they take up so much space for so long that for me to grow enough I'd need another plot for everything else.

So if my maths is correct (never been that good, so please correct me if you think I'm wrong.

A 10ft row of main crop would mean a harvest of about 20lb so maybe I could fit in two rows of 20ft+ at the top of my plot. (Reduce squash & sweetcorn)
2 rows of about 10ft of potaoes in rubble bags or old compost bags turned inside out.

should give me a total of about 120lb so is that almost 55kg

I just have to weigh up if I think it's worth it.

If you went into a garden centre you would pick up a 2Kg bag of maincrop seed potatoes for about £3.49/£3.99 (of course much cheaper if you find an independant store selling them)

So planted two to a foot, worse case would be one 10ft row giving you 9kg

Now they would be home grown but I'm sure some of you can question if it's real money saving when £2.99 at tesco for 7.5kg sack and last time I was in Morrisons £3.49 for 12kg sack. Although this is dependant on which seed potatoes you are buying. These sacks are normally the supermarkets budget ranges.

Hope you haven't fallen asleep reading this.
    Kind Regards

to add in more figures.... I got a 25Kg sack from a farm shop for £5.50 (prices round here varied from £5.50-£7)..

for me it isn't worth it... whether in the ground or pots - takes up so much space... I am thinking I may do a bag or two of new potatoes (as the kids love digging them up!) and a bag for christmas - we then get the taste and satisfaction of a few homegrown without the loss of space.....

I agree.. carrots can be bought cheaply but... nothing beats the flavour of homegrown young carrots - so intense! So I do grow those - mainly to eat raw either whole or in salads... (my ds apparently gets funny looks from the dinnerladies as in the summer.. he has small raw carrots, small raw cougettes and peas in pods as part of his lunch! lol!)
