well this morning is is bright with a clear blue sky. Great off to the allotment - No - I can't because OH is outn running and my 8 year old is going out mid morning so I'm stuck in the house.

So I'm sat here at the dining table with a sea of seed packets, enough for five years planting let alone this years. Quite pleased to discover more sunflowers seeds, didn't realise I'd got so many, all different colours. The chickens will be happy.

Hope the rest of you get a chance to get some work done.
    Kind Regards
    Maz

  • Hi Mumof4,

Many thanks for 12 mths gardening plan. I have to say, I've yet to read it as the weather is not very encouraging plus I'm still trying to shake off this cold LOL! I keep reminding myself, i really should get started if I wanna be on schedule. :j

been out digging at the plot. Didn'#t get much dug but still nice to be doing something.

The polytunnel was a fantastic 21 degrees at 1.45 today. Amazing for January. I've checked the next few days on the met office site and it looks like a good week for us - the grow you own club;)

So having some lunch and going to do some work on the chicken run and look again at my purple coup.

Hope everyone is enjoying a nice warm January afternoon.
    Kind Regards
    Maz

  • Mumof4 thanks very much for the plans! I can only dream of having that set up!

I have questions for experienced gardeners...

This year will be my first year growing veg. I'm not sure how brave to be. I have carrot seeds, sweetcorn and cauliflower. I don't know whether to have a bash at everything I hope to do eventually or stay safe with a few?! I'm scared! :D

How strict are the 'best before' dates on seeds? I have LOADS of carrot seeds in my packet, I doubt I'll use them all.

Do you recommend staggered planting to harvest plants in a way they can be not wasted?

    Sorry about all the questions!

retro - keep your seeds in the fridge and they'll usually last a year or two longer than the best before date. After that you will just find that fewer of them germinate.

I usually stagger things like carrots and beetroot. I've not tried sweetcorn or cauliflower.
