home fell through.... ds been v.upset about it all :( have been having huge discussions.... dh and I have decided to try and soundproof the house - we felt that if we could minimise absolutely any early morning noise then there could be no complaints... so fingers crossed :D

I ordered the purple eglue because members on the omlet forum seem to be agreed that it helped in the mornings, darker for longer. Time will tell if that's true.

I'm sorry that the new hom fell through but pleased that your going to try to keep them.

I spoke to NBF yesturday and they had some good stock, so if they have them I'm thinking

    Goldline,Bovans Nera,Light Sussex,Speckly,Maran Cuivree,bluebell.

The speckly and Maron Cuivee are showing as out of stock but I thought I might just see what they have and then maybe get some from the farm in siston>As long as I introduce them all on the same day I think I should be OK. The children don't want a blackrock because they would think of marmite too much, the amber star I could find one with more brown on it and well I can't do much about the goldline being such a friendly hen and good layer I must have another one.

    Kind Regards
    Maz

I'll be interested to hear how you find the purple eglu over the summer (but dh would be devastated if we didn't keep his lovingly made house

  • Can anyone suggest links to helpful sites for beginner vegetable gardening? I'm going to have a bash this year - I have the garden space, but currently not the ability!

I'm specifically looking for info on what to plant & when and how many seeds can yield what.

How long the veg can be frozen for?

PS. Will PM for plans now

I did some experiments on those cheap aldi veggies (hopefully next year will be eating much more of our own ;) ) I found the following method worked really well.

    1) prepare the veg ie into florets, peeled in slices/cubes/batons

    2) boil a pan of water (not too small a pan) make sure it is a fast boil.

    3) add the veg batch by batch (don't overload the pan as this reduces the water temp too much). Blanch for 3-5 mins, then cool quickly under cold water. Wait till pan is back to a fast boil and repeat till all veg done.

4)I gave the veg a quick dry, but not sure this is essential.

    5) useing freezer trays (or any open tray that will stand being frozen ie a baking tray) spread the veggies out on the tray to freeze. Ensure they are thinly spaced to make sure they freeze as quickly as possible and not in clumps. You may need to clear a space in you freezer to do this flash freezing.

    6) the frozen veg can be bagged up now to take up less space.

7)cook the veg straight from frozen. I usually steam, but have boiled and seems to work fine as well. Just watch you don't overcook them as they will cook faster than fresh. I even roasted parsnip batons straight from the freezer into hot oil.

Made for an easier crimbo lunch with only potatos to peel :j

  • Are there cheap places to buy seeds online? I've found a few, but none cheaper than B&Q. Or would B&Q be the cheapest?
