To be honest never did any of that. I don't even cut the roots on my leeks and they always turn out fine.
You could try doing those things, I always found that I could ask two old chaps down the lotty site and they would both do different things and get results. I was told I'd sown my peas all wrong in my first year yet I had the best crop on the whole site.
"I always found that I could ask two old chaps down the lotty site and they would both do different things and get results." That's so true.
I find that "testing" different methods will eventually provide a solution to the problem. However, when it comes to wind-burnt green beans - well, I haven't found a solution for that one yet. :-) Or moles - they are everywhere but mainly in those beds where you have just sown your seeds.sod's law I suppose.0 -

Tip,
Miy MIL, lets say found, some Asda shopping baskets. She sinks them in the ground about a row of 5 or 6 baskets and plants her runner beans. She does this for lots of other veg. So far in those areas the mole has never been seen.Kind Regards

Just catching up with this thread today when I saw your post about the poor chuckies mo4. So sorry. I suppose the only consolation is the fox is only following his natural instincts, but bet you miss them pottering around.
A friend of mine sold up with her mum and dad (and her OH and 2 kids) they bought a rundown farmhouse with some land. As her dad was a builder her turned it into 2 houses with separate doors.
One of the first things they did was get a large chuck house and 12 chucks.
She and the kids loved them and had them wih no problems for 3 years. She went away for a weekend with the kids and parents and drilled it into oh that the chickens had to be locked up at night. He had to work late then had a few glasses of beer and forgot. Needless to say lost all 12. Foxes took 3 but killed them all. They were so upset. Got 12 more now and oh never has lived it down. She says he is now obsessed with checking for signs of foxes and ensuring they are locked up.
My OH and DD1 are v keen to get a few chucks but I worry about this, mind you we have 4 gardens with dogs around ours so hope this would help put off any foxes. DD1 is only 5 and I am not sure how she we take it if we lost them to a fox, but I suppose unless we try it I won't know how attached she would be to them anyway.

Thanks Ali - one of my chidren is 5 and the first thing said when we told her wasd ' can we got one that lays blue eggs this time'
All the children were upset and actually more today because they went to play in the garden and normally the ladies would sit and watch them play on the swings.
My elderly neighbours on the other side said' we'll miss talking to them'
Will find out about getting some more on Monday but I do wonder if they will be such friendly and funny hens - sure they will beKind Regards

Inresponse to a few pm's
The plans show what is planted in a space for any set month it is not what can be harvested.
The plan is to help keep the soil full of crops so that the planting area's reach their full potential. So no wasted soil and no missed crops.
You will get failures as we all do.
Easiest crops to grow. Beetroot, swede, courgette and beans.
All crops are easy with a little bit of know how but the above are almost fool proof.Kind Regards
