We had alot of problems with blight last year, and having clay soil doesn't help. going to do some drainage work before anything else, but wondered is it worth going for a blight resistant variety of spuds? Thinking of charlotte, but any advice would be useful.

Hi - last year we tried the Sarpo Mira - expensive to buy - BUT - boy oh boy - it does work. This year we had blight on all of the tomatoes, and the two varieties of potatoes - but the Sarpos were untouched, the leaves stayed green (we called the sarpo bed - jungle spuds) until they died off and were ready for digging up. This year there is another variety of the sarpo - but it's even more expensive than the Miras so we shall stick to this one then. We also grow Wilja - that's our fave spud - but it does like getting blight although we learnt to snip off the infected leaves asap so it doesn't have chance to spread. Hope this helps. Good luck.
  • Hi mum of 4,

Just wanted to say thank you for the plan. Have not had a chance to study it in great detail yet but it looks like exactly what I need.

    Thanks again :T

Hi Mum of 4, I am so sorry to hear about your chickens. The shock is terrible too isn't it? One of our rabbits died a couple of weeks ago and I felt physically sick when I found her. It was so hard telling the girls so I hope your children are okay. Hopefully you get some more soon and with six you will have loads of great manure for the allotment.

Don't worry about having a moan - you are among friends :) My friends and I let off steam to each other all the time.

Don't know if you saw my earlier post, but I would love to see some photos of your garden and allotment if you have any?

Thanks, the children are not that bad actually. When we first got the chickens my OH said that a fox might get them but that's what animals do. My 5 yearold girl seems more upset today but what was really sad was my 2 year old girl who keeps saying izzy gone, izzy gone. Izzy was the pekin who we've had since a chick.

I'm really sorry about the lack of photo's. I only have one that I took on the day after I got my key, three years ago:eek: . But I promise that I will be taking some. I'm hope to get a camera for my Birthday in May but my Dad has got a brillant one and he's going to take some.
    Kind Regards
    Maz

So in answer to many PM's today I thought it might beeasier to put this info on the thread.

    Things I'm doing this month

I've been really bad over Christmas I've not been to the plot once. It's so flipping cold. My OH hates putting on the heating and I can't ever remember having it on through the day but for the last three days it's been on all the time.

Not much happening at the plot,
mid January I'll sow some carrots in the PT, may be some more early peas,
lettuce (summer), spring onion but still winter lisbon, plant my shallots outside but may wait until February, plant up my strawberries in the polytunnel which have been left outside in pots.

Try and dig over my plot if the weather allows, I actually like digging but not when it's water logged or freezing
    Kind Regards
    Maz
