  • You lot certainly sound as though you know what youre talking about so I thought I'd ask about the portable DVD players Tescos have in for £74.99. Anyone seen one/bought one? Theyre on 'special purchase' too, and seem a bargain - OH wants 2 for work.
    Any help greatly appreciated!

  • Bought one of these today myself and have one minor niggle with it so far:

As mentioned above it has RGB inputs and outputs, yet although I get RGB loopthrough when the unit is turned on (with the scart input source selected) I only get composite when it's left in standby.

This is somewhat annoying as I have to leave the unit turned on permanently to get RGB picture on my TV. I was led to believe that this recorder *did* give RGB loopthrough in standby, so could someone else who has bought one please let me know if they get RGB loopthrough when in standby or not? If I've just got a dodgy unit I'll take it back for replacement, otherwise will have to decide whether it's worth keeping and just put up with leaving it permanently on...
  • For anyone with NTL connection problems to the dvd player....

I too had the same problem initially so don't worry! Basically its my one annoyance with the player as it doesn't recognise any sky or ntl signal as a separate 'channel' like my old vcr used to. The scan feature only scans for the aerial input terrestrial tv channels and not the ntl/sky signal by scart. To record from sky or ntl you have to press the 'source' button on the remote(you may have to press several times to scroll through the connections) to switch to the scart that goes TO your dvd input FROM the NTL box(marked video out on my Pace NTL Box ). It will display SC SP on the front of the dvd player when you are there. Once there just simply record as normal and it will lock the dvd player to record that channel as normal.(Note you cannot record and watch a different channel throught the dvd player when recording unless you watch a terrestrial tv prog through the aerial connections.)

    I hope this helps?
    Let me know if not!

I get rgb loopthrough in standby (if its ntl you are using goto the guide and setup (on your ntl box) and select settings-display-change to rgb or composite whichever you prefer)
The only problem when you switch it off and then on again it goes automatically to the dvd screensaver and you have to switch to tv everytime.

  • i think tesco will exchange it no questions asked.

i exchanged mine when there was nothing wrong with it, i just didnt have it set up right. i also didnt have all of the packaging and accidently forgot to give them their blank disc back. plus i had upgraded (or possibly downgraded!) the firmware, which probably would invalidate the warranty.

Thanks for the feedback guys, will take it back to Tesco today to get it replaced and hopefully have better luck with the next one! FWIW I'm using it connected to my Sky box, which is set up to output RGB - like I say the loopthrough does work with the recorder powered up so all the connections are correct, just in standby that things aren't right.

does anyone know of another DVD recorder around the same price that plays divx and has a USB port? I've phoned every tesco in my area and nowhere has these in stock. Was looking to get one as a Christmas gift.

I bought one Monday evening as a Chrimbo present, so haven't tested it yet, but thanks for the reassurance over the 28 day returns policy. I bought mine through the self-checkout so didn't get no blue-folder-jobbie.

As for stock, Tesco Highwoods (colchester) had about 20 on Monday night.
