Thanks Taurusgb:) I think I need to start 'work' on myself now for my daughters's wedding -she's 8 btw.

wm repair man has been, fixed wm, eaten one of my coconut and lime fairy cakes and gone :D Didn't cost too much either. So glad we didn't rush out a buy another one on Saturday when it stopped working. Despite not doing any washing since Saturday I'm surprised at how little there is to do:confused: maybe I do too much and could actually cut down.

Nimbo mash is one of the best things to have leftover;)

I like to fry it very slowly (in bacon fat or dripping for preference, but any oil will do) so that a lovely golden-brown crust forms on the bottom. Once the bottom crust has formed turn it gently over and let the other side brown. It doesn't matter if you turn it sections rather than one piece.

Additions include onion, bacon, corned beef, any other leftover meat or even fish, finely shredded cabbage and leeks, grated carrot, cheese (blue cheese is really good). Serve with baked beans and/or fried eggs.

I wish I had some mash now.

I knew I should have got straight in the bath - no good ever comes of self indulgent wanderings on the internet.

Thought I would have a lttle treat of a bar of chocolate (shhh - I only let the children have sweets at the weekend) and a glass of milk whilst I read a couple of threads before having my bath. Poured the milk, opened the chocolate and put them both carefully next to the laptop. Went to answer the door and when I got back the cat was sitting on the chocolate drinking the milk!!:mad::eek:

Serves me right I suppose :o

    Afternoon all,

Cold here to-day but no rain so sitting with a long scarf draped round me to save on turning the radiator here on, not sure how much it saves but every little helps!

Ulick wasn't well at weekend, having severe head pains so he was re-admitted to hospital on Monday...came home to-day with a streaming cold and on paracetemol for pains in head...he is to see consultant on Tuesday next so questions will be asked! Was going to have leftover pork chops( they are now for freezer) for tea but will now cook the steak that I 'saved' yesterday as we had dinner in brother's.

Anniestar sounds like a wonderful bargain for your kitchen,....haven't got all my costs yet but am already at almost ten times yours!

Csarina...thanks for limescale tip....I wage a constant war on the stuff.

Haribo...gave up on other thread but please don't stop posting, you would be sorely missed.

Budget has been a bit battered this week with lots of visitors needing to be fed...think that I would like to make some pickled red cabbage, ours has grown so well this year...does anyone have a recipe or can you point me in the general direction of one please.

    Have a good day all,

  • Quick question-I have 3 medium sized sweet potatoes in the fridge, some carrots that need using and a couple of onions. I will also have some left over chicken later.....could I place it all in the SC overnight with a veggie stockcube/water and make into a soup? What would be the best way to do and how much liquid etc? I can freeze any excess. Also have in a broth dry mix:confused: tinned sweetcorn, tinned chickpeas etc etc:confused::confused:

Did a baked spud for OH & I in the Remoska for lunch and used up the last of the coleslaw and cheddar that was opened.

OH popped into M&S on way home from course and they had big bags of grated mature cheddar on offer at £2.39 each or 2 for £3.00 which seems good value and can be frozen. He also got 3 tester cheeses at 99p each to take away next week. Their bread was 79p for an 800g loaf which seemed reasonable. They also had most of their fruit and veg at 2 for £3 including some of the big bags of apples and spuds.

MrsMw-I have put my main oven on once since I got the Remoska a couple of months back and that was because I cooked a HUGE lasagna with garlic dough balls. I made a lovely cheese omelette yesterday morning for all 3 of us using 5 eggs and it was lovely with a squirt of HP. Havent done a desert yet. Bought the shallow dish and thats great for anything that needs cooking faster or crisping like roasties, chips, baked spuds, pizza and pies, fish etc.

Tonight we are having Chicken Stir Fry/Chow mein using a bag of stir fried veg, 2 x 8p noodles made up, and half a chicken. Loads of dark Soy sauce makes it taste lovely. I also have a pack of Chinese starters that were reduced in Sainsburys a few weeks back to 50p from £4.99...so will pop those in the Remoska about half hr before hand. Forgot about them actually:rolleyes:

Sold an item on Ebay yesterday for £7, so that has paid my fees and put me in credit as I hope to list some more stuff after I come out of hospital as I will be bored.

Freecycled a few more bits the other day and we got rid of an old TV, TV stand, chair and some books.

    Take care everyone.

OH & I were discussing last night if we truly need a HUGE chest freezer we have outside and we really dont think we do. The thing is, we have a normal sized fridge and freezer in the kitchen on their last legs and we have been debating to buy an american style one which will have a bigger freezer than we have in the kitchen already. They are not cheap and I have seen one I like and as I drink sooooo much water, it would be good for that too. I think we have come to the conclusion that if we do this and empty the freezer we have, we will go to fortnightly shopping and buy what we need from mealplan, then buy fresh fruit/veg from Aldi as we find thats the best quality for the price. We are trying to get the budget down by £10pw as OH would love a coffee machine, but these are dear but if we can claw back money elsewhere, than its not costing us anything IYSWIM. Does anyone have a USA freezer?

    xx

Hi from a not so newbie, as I post on a couple of other threads and I recognise a couple of you from these threads too.

I just wanted to say to Penny-Pincher that if she pops over to Comet Auctions they have a fair few USA fridge freezers at considerably cheaper prices than in the Comet stores. They are mainly clearance stock, or returned stock - might have a dent or scratch but these are normally at the side. I too am looking at getting a USA fridge freezer within the next couple of weeks to go in the kitchen when it is being done, and a friend very kindly pointed me in the direction of this website.

Just thought you could get a nice f/f for a fraction of the cost of a store one, if you know what I mean.

    Picked Red Cabbage

I love just about anything pickled!! This is quite a plain recipe but it tastes good.

    Red Cabbages
    Salt and Water
To each 1.1lt (2 pints) of Vinegar:
    25g (1oz) Whole Black Pepper
    Cayenne, to taste
    Red food colouring (optional)
    • Take off the outside leaves of a red cabbage, cut in quarters, removing the stalks and cut it into very thin slices.
    • Lay these on a dish and sprinkle generously with salt, covering them with another dish.
    • Allow to stand for 24 hours, turn into a colander to drain, and then wipe lightly with a clean soft cloth.
    • Put them into sterilised jars.
    • Boil the vinegar up with the spices and leave to go cold.
    • Once cold, pour it over the cabbage.
    • It will be fit for use in a week or two but if kept for a very long time, the cabbage gets softer and can discolour.
    • To be really nice and crisp and of a good red colour, it should be eaten almost immediately after it is made.
    • A little red food colouring added to the vinegar improves the appearance of this pickle.
    • Seal the jar and keep in a dry place.
I also found this one which you might prefer HERE
