Robstor some of the problems have been with poor signals because some transmitters have out of band multiplexes like Winter Hill, requiring a wideband aerial. The software update tomorrow is designed to get over that problem, we shall see.

I believe that most, if not all, transmitters have an out of band MUX requiring a wideband aerial. I cannot see how a software update can resolve this??

  • Hi Chaps,

    thanks for the replies.

DC :xmassign: The transmitter is Winter Hill and the aerial is not a newish one at a guess but it is A full on chimney job and no problems on either of the other 2 freeview boxes in the girlfriends house. Nor is there a problem watching chanel 5 etc. if you are not recording another chanel but very, very glitchy (ie. unwatchable) if you are. A strange one methinks.

    Anyone else have any ideas??

Also just thought I'd add that I've also got the ITV no sound problem (roll on update) and more of a pain is that if the !!!!!! has come out of standby and is recording something (blue light on) then no picture or anything just sweet FA until you pull the plug out and re-power cycle. (ballsing up your recording, of course)

Ta's and :xmassign: to one and all, by the way :rudolf:

I have a PVR 101 that I bought from Aldi before Christmas. I'm really glad to find this thread and see the problems people are having.
So far my problems have been: first two days I had it I set it up fine, selected 'auto update' and it froze overnight so I deselected auto update.
Since then it recorded 1 out 4 progs whilst I was away, I have had it freeze/lock up and had to reboot by turning off at the back. Picture fine, sound volume lower than normal from Sandy mast. Just tried recording 3 progs over the last 12 hours and all seem fine. Tried to view a test record yesterday and it froze.
Having read a lot of this thread I will wait for the software update and hope, if not it goes back.

Update: I found more info on Winter Hill B and it's Mux-C and Mux-D that have the filler transmissions - nowt to do with ITV - so maybe this is a red-herring for the sound problem. These two Muxes are out-of-band (group E) on the B frequencies though.

What transimtter are you you using (winter hill?) and are you using a (new/ish) wide band aerial?

    Robstor - I don't have that problem.
The transmitter is at Bluebell Hill.
I have a new High gain aerial.
The box has deen working great today with no problems at all.. Except maybe the clock freezes after a while when in standby.

I guess your issue was different to the Winter Hill one - maybe there was a transmitter fault and they fixed it today - strange co-incidence if it was though.

Look forward to chatting so more after 10am tomorrrow

lets hope the update transmits tomorrow, will the PVR101 receive the update in standby mode or does it need to be turned on? was planning to leave it turned on to BBC1 to maximise chances of a successful update.

talking of standby, i notice mine will only record when left on, not when left in standby, every recorder i've had before needed to be left in standby on order to record. is that the story with this one or is that yet another fault?
thanks to everyone who has thanked me!

Hmmmm... am about to buy a PVR and now not sure which one to get... think I want a twin tuner one and have a budget of 160 odd... kinda worried having read this thread now though. May leave it a while. Any ideas? :)
Being bored is so boring Im bored of it... :rotfl:
  • Leave loads of air around the box, it overheats easily. If you get no signal put it into standby and power down after a min, then restart and works first time. Mine seems a lot more stable now for some reason.

It recorded on standby last night no problem. When I have the update i am pretty sure I will keep it nothing comes close price/twin tunerwise.
    This signature is not mine!
  • Just downloaded the update first thing I noticed is that signal strength has risen from 75% to 100 % on my indoor aerial, did a record and timeshift test ok,have set a couple of recordings ...keeping fingers crossed
