  • Downloaded and installed the upgrade; now it won't record! Neither instant nor timer. Also, all my deleted recording came back. I've formatted the hard disk - no joy. Helpline constantly engaged (poor sods!) Any suggestions from you techies would be appreciated. I'm reluctant to take it back to Aldi because it seems so close to being a very useful piece of kit.

When this happens, shouldn't the RCD on my mains consumer unit trip? I thought that's what they were for. Also, is it dangerous?
    Ian.

The two are related: there is not enough current flowing to trip the RCD, and the danger is correspondingly reduced. The sensitivity of the RCD is deliberately controlled, to avoid false tripping. When you make the connection, the leakage current is still flowing, but through the connectors instead of you. You wouldn't want that to trip the RCD.
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.

Did you try power-cyling the box then doing a "first time installation"?

After doing a "first time instllation" and re-scanning all the channels my box has been stable for the last hour and I've been giving it a really hard time. Havn't seen the "no signal" error again (yet?!?!) even though I've tried to reproduce it a lot. some more observations:

The "timer" screen looks a little different possibly. (I didn't look at this screen much before) Did it have picture in picture before?

The hard-disk spins down in a second or 2 when going on to standby, and while the box is in use it spins down when not in use quickly too. I like this, although is causes a very minor little pause on some screens as it spins back up.

The PVR wakes up and records from standby, as others have noted.

I think the EPG may be populating slightly better than before (it's difficult to tell though).

Haven't done a test for "hangs in standby" yet - will try that overnight.

  • To Lorian.
No. I'll try that right now, thanks.
  • Lorian, you're a star! Thank you very much. Did what you said and tried an instant record - perfect. I set it to record some chap named Martin helping people save money - that'll never work! It started recording on time. Still got a slight glitch in that there is no sound whilst it's recording this way. Once again, thanks.
  • Uh oh, spoke too soon. On checking, its actually recorded without sound! Still, we're making progress ;-)

Try turning the box off for 10 seconds and then back on - then try replaying your recording of Martin - does it have sound then?

I made sure I got ITV to have sound, before I started the recording

Fingers crossed; I repeated everything I've done so far and it appears to be recording properly in both modes.

    Thanks again.
