Hi
I appreciate your post...but I'm a seasoned OS-er. I work full time, run 2 allotments, we grow ALL our own veg, the fridge is full of preserves I've made and I've been cooking from scratch for as long as I can remember - I had a blip in the 90s, but even before then I would cook all my own meals. When I first left home, my landlady told me off for cooking a curry from scratch and asked why I didn't just eat ready meals since it was 'just me'.
I was making my own clothes when I was in school. I owned a sewing machine when I was 14.
I've never said move the chat anywhere, my initial comment was that I always thought it was a old style over the fence chit chat thread - not an OS thread about recipes and tips etc.
Sorry to have gotten annoyed about the 'if you don't like it' issue, but it seemed to me the OS-ers were closing ranks on anyone with opinions but those that agreed with theirs.
I've got books choc full of recipes from parents/grandparents/ across continents - and have prided myself on being able to knock together a meal no matter what is in the fridge - if anything. I lived hard frugal for several years when I was putting myself through my degree.
I only ever post on OS threads when someone expresses a need for something. I'm not here to collect 'thanks', in fact I think I'd be better off far far away from here to be honest...it's just the Mac is in the Dining Room and I flit in and out inbetween work and cooking. I do think measuring popularity by the amount of thanks you get is slightly off kilter but each to their own.
Hi, just like to say that I press the thanks button to let the poster know that I have read their post and appreciated comments made, I never thought of it as mearuring popularity, want to press your thanks button:o but don't know if I'll upset you, hope not......oh well here goes Thanks0 -

You have upset some regulars on the Daily Thread. I had never seen you on the Daily Thread, as I have mentioned, I am a newcomer, so what I was trying to convey was that perhaps if you wanted to post on the Daily Thread then you would be welcome but because perhaps some of the regulars may be upset you may like to let the dust settle. I never meant to imply that you couldn't 'do' OS things (I can't), but your style of posting seems more like the posts on the Arms (which is a bit too rough and tumble for me) and less like the posts on the Daily Thread.
After all, the posts on the Daily Thread are very different from the FlyLady, and then there are all the short 'how do I...?' posts which are different again on the Old Style Board.
I didn't mean to imply that you should not post on the Old Style Board, or even the Old Style Thread. I am sure you are comfortable and know where you would like to post.Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -

Hi,
I must admit to being slightly baffled by your response Pink-winged.
In your original post you asked for opinions of the current Daily thread and reading back through each and every reply that is what you got, surely your intention was to cause debate within the the board users?
I don't know whether I am being a little sensitive here but the tone of your post reminded me of a school teacher talking to her naughty pupils after she, herself instigated the naughtiness!
Can I suggest that in future if you wish to start a debate please make your original post less ambiguous as we seem to all have interpreted it in different ways.

Trouble is if you put a ban on chit chat you will get lots of messages telling people off and that would be annoying. This happens on cinema codes and people still chat. I remember Squeaky years ago proposing a thread which would be like a coffee shop and there would be daily chat, I think this was the thread that came of it. If you look at the start of it as started by Queenie it says to stop and say HI., I do not see the problem myself. All my views are just that and do not constitute legal advice in any way, shape or form.£2.00 savers club - £20.00 saved and banked (got a £2.00 pig and not counted the rest)Joined Store Cupboard Challenge]0

Absolutely 100% correct. I've not been on the Daily Thread as a poster as I've lurked and just thought it was a chat thread.
Which is why when the Board Guides asked for opinions I gave it. As a lurker.
Not all OS-ers do the fluffy stuff. Or want to.
I have upset some regulars; by having an opinion?
My point is that the regulars seem to have upset some older posters - which is why the question was first asked. I'm not one of them and have never PMed the Board guides about it.
I only ventured in there today to see 'you haven't upset anyone - just look at your thanks' - which I believe one poster mentioned at the start of the 'debate' and got shot down for it - again it was an opinion.
This is an open forum, and an open question was asked. We are all humans with differing opinions. I'd say that if opinions are not required, then the question should not have been asked.0 -
going back to the OP... I, too, used to post on the daily thread.. i stopped because, ultimately, it was just taking up too much of my time! I battle computer "addiction", for want of a better word, all the time - the tendency to just.. "oh i'll just check that site.. this site.. the other site.." and before you know it, its 5.30 and you've done NOTHING but surf the net all day. At the same time the 'net can and does provide a valuable support network, whereever you find it, so i made the decision to concentrate on my blog and sporadic posting here, rather than posting on the daily thread.
I do believe that the daily thread is not appropriate in the technology its using. Its trying to do a chat on a message board, which is what makes it so long, especially if all those signatures and things are appended - several people have commented that when you come in from work at the end of the day, its just too much trying to read the whole thing. a chatroom would avoid all that.
If Martin would be willing to host a chat on the server that also hosts the MSE board, i do believe a "chat" area would be better, either in Javascript or IRC style. This would enable all those who want the support network and to get to know people via this place to chat away about mrsdailythingamob's seagull that splattered all over little billy's batman pyjamas (when he won't wear any others) to their heart's content, and keep the daily thread (here on the OS board) for those who want to post longer things like recipes or tips, ask questions and so on for that purpose.
A chat area would be good for other parts of the OS boards as well - what about those people who really are at the end of their tether with their debts, being able to speak to someone directly?
just a thought...

i havent read the whole thread and can only gather what i have read so far but it seems this discussion is coming up too often now, where a thread ie the daily is causing too much aggro esp for the board guides, who may i say do a fantastic job, then it should be scrapped, this is too nice a board for this aggro to keep on happening.
Is there no where else that people could chat to others? ie chatroom etc and just keep the daily for os happenings etc
it just seems to have lost its meaning of late, one of the reasons why i have now lost heart, i have felt in the last few months to be an outcast and the daily has been a bit clique of late, people will only mention the same people every day and not others
that is not given a good impression to newbies and lurkers
i have done my fair share of hugs and hi's but felt i needed to do this just to join in as i said before i feel like im on the outside looking in and this is from someone who has been a reg poster to the daily for a good 2/3 years.
I hope soemthing gets resolved finally as it just seems to be the same issue getting discussed.
To pink, you do a fantastic job, please dont lose heart over this:A0 -
I'm another one who has been here [STRIKE]far too long [/STRIKE]since the OS board and daily thread was "invented". Over the years, it has helped to teach me how to lead a semi-OS way of life. Obviously there is the rest of the board for this, but the support has come from the Daily Thread.
Unfortunately, I also feel that sometimes my voice hasn't been heard but that's also probably due to the fact that I don't have anything fascinating to say all the time. However, you have all helped me over the years/months to keep on track. If I've ever felt like slipping off the OS wagon, then I have known that I can come back here for support.
The thread has changed recently. Possibly I feel like that because I haven't posted on a regular basis or when I have posted it has been late at night. It's also tricky to keep up with what other people have said and it is easy to feel ignored when everyone else is saying hi to everyone but you (or so it seems. I am a sensitive soul, I'm afraid).
I hope that we can all come here as "friends" whether we've "known" each other for one day or one month.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0
