I am really worried about this postcode lottery stuff. How do you find out about different maternity units? Are there any web sites? I am loath to go to my local hospital to give birth. From the sounds of things they run a baby conveyor belt in there. They make you hang out in the car park till you are about to drop, then they give you a bed at what seems to be the last moment, then it takes a few more hours than expected and they chop you open to get it out so they can give your bed to another woman waiting in the carpark
My husband is freaked out about the idea of a home birth, how do you find out about midwife units and is it easy to get refered to them if they are not in your local area? I am in south east London by the way.0 -

maryjane you might find you have a choice of a couple of hospitals to be honest... I had the choice of 2 out here in the middle of no-where oxforshire
Ironically the closest to me is in Bucks but I can't go there because I'm just over the county border... daft huh?
Instead of listening to horror stories about the hospital go and see it for yourself... I've heard good and bad stories about where I'll be giving birth and you probably will everywhere else too.
Sometimes it can come down to who exactly you get delivering when you're there and ofcourse if they suddenly get a "wave" of women giving birth - some early, some late - then things will run slightly different than normal - but that's going to happen at any hospital... Unless you want to pay to go private...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

With private, aren't you in the same hospitals, with the same staff, just a private room? Thats what my SIL found when she looked into it, but that was a few years ago now.Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0

Maryjane - I was given the option of going over the county border if I wanted. Basically with the nhs care you are supposed to be able to give birth wherever you want and you receive antenatal care wherever you want to give birth IYSWIM.
So my midwife said I could go into Staffordshire no problem but I would have to see them for all my antenatal care (meaning I would no longer have any antenatal care at my local docs).
But you have ages before you need to be thinking about things like that - welcome aboard, congratulations and how do you feel so far.please listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120 -
It is exciting but a little bit unreal at the moment. The big question is when to tell people. Around christmas or just before I think is a good time, but my OHs best mate has been TTC for over 4 years and had a miscarriage just before Christmas last year. I have only known my OH 3.5 years and got pg as soon as we staretd trying, so we are trying to be a bit sensitive to my OHs best mate.
I don't think there is any such thing as just telling one or 2 close people because they just tell one or 2 people and so it goes on before you start getting random congratulations on Facebook when nobody is suppossed to know.
But none of you are real people, right? (please don't congratulate me on Facebook rofl)0 -
I think it depends on how you feel about it as a couple. Personally, we didn't wait, especially with family and friends and we just told people as we went along. I also told work very early on because I was having some heart trouble that needed some extra appointments and I didn't want to take holiday or keep making excuses. I went along the lines of all these people will need to know if the worst were to happen anyway so I would rather tell them now so they can be supportive.
There are other ladies on here who have learned the hard way that if you tell the world you then have to un-tell the world...
If your OH normally shares everything with his best mate (for example if had he told him you were TTC) then I would treat this as other aspects of their friendship and be honest. It will be tough for the mate but ultimately keeping it from him when you would normally have told him will be tough to...
....and welcome to the world of baby brain where we waffle away and make no sense.
I'm not here today anyway, ignore meplease listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120 -
I was more hurt by the SIL who hid the fact that she was pregnant, than the SIL who told me openly. I was going to find out in the end, and I didn't like the fact that they'd all discussed it and decided not to tell me because it would hurt me. Luckily, OH didn't join in thier secret keeping, and he told me.Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0

I was discussing pain relief with my Mum, and how I've decided that I don't want to give birth anymore. I don't want opiates or an epidural, but I've got a really low pain threshold. She said I'll be find on gas and air, and that I'm built for childbirth. All the women in the family have really easy labours, even with twins. Should I be hopefully?
Probably far too early to be thinking of this, but I'm all worried!
When it comes to pain relief I believe that it's folly to make firm decisions on what you do or don't want until you're actually in labour and able to consciously decide what you can cope with. I've tried everything except c-section and my best (and easiest) birth experience was in a water pool with gas and air not because I was better equipped to deal with the pain, but because the power had been given to me to make the decision and that relaxed me a huge amount. I had an epidural with #2 and was so so against it until I got it, but I loved it while it worked. Opiates didn't rock my boat at all though.
But that's me! Your experience will be different because it's yours0
