I don't normally read this thread (as I'm not pregnant at the mo!) but feelinggood's post made me feel really sad. I don't know why people have to ruin child birth with horror stories. We humans are conditioned to forget what pain feels like and when we talk about our experiences we have to put into words the visual feelings which unfortunately means that most people exaggerate what actually happened.

feelinggood, don't worry about your low pain threshold. If you accept it is happening and let yourself go, then it really isn't that bad. I've had one hospital birth (never again..too managed) and two home births. The first time I was so tense and completely unprepared (had been planning to give birth at home) but thankfully I didn't have to listen to the horror stories. The second and third time, plenty of people had to tell me all about their 'horrendous' labours; I had to tell them what lovely births I had. The end result is so wonderful that the indiginity of childbirth is worth going through.

just listen to everyones advice and then do what is right for you, the first one i had pethadine but i didnt like that as it made me feel out of it for a while especially afterwards as i couldnt hold my baby for long cause i was worried i was going to fall asleep again, the second one i had gas and air and was more in control, yes it hurt a bit both times but its bearable and you quickly forget it, both times i had to have my waters broke and its painless and speeds up labour very quickly for me.
i had little labour pains for a few hours but from when it actually started hurting and being uncomfortable id say my longest labout was about 3 hrs and ive had migraines that lasted longer than that .

I'll mention all this to the consultant when I have my appointment. Hopefully they'll be able to advise. I remember now that I didn't mention my history of substance abuse to the Midwife.

I don't know why all the appointments have to come at once. I've got nothing for weeks, then in decemeber I've got four appointments in one week!

  • feely - write everything you want to tell them and ask them down. You will forget when you get there if you don't.

At one of my midwife appointments she asked me if I was okay and if I had anything I wanted to ask and I said I was fine and I couldn't think of anything...

Hubby looked at me like I had grown another head - I had been in tears several times in the days running up to the appointment because I had pains in the bottom of my bump!! I had just forgotten in the heat of the moment!

I now write everything down so I can ask when I am there - it's what they are there for after all!

I am really worried about this postcode lottery stuff. How do you find out about different maternity units? Are there any web sites? I am loath to go to my local hospital to give birth.

I too live in London and am worried about the terrible state of local services. Birth Choice UK (think the site is birthchoiceuk.com) have a great website where you can click on all the available maternity services and see how they have been rated, there are also detailed surveys that compare feedback with users of the service to the national average. not that cheering for me unfortunately as all my options rate dismally. all women in the uk are legally entitled to choose a home birth. two midwives should be listed to attend this (again i think this is for legal reasons incase of complications) although in practice this doesn't always happen. my friend had a home birth and managed really well with pain distraction (sniffing a lavender oil soaked tissue and mind control!) but she had an older female friend on hand who had given birth as well as partner. also they lived very close to the hospital should things have not been going so smoothly.
