Just a quick question. For those with children already - have any of you followed (however loosely) the Gina Ford Contented Baby routines? I know this could start quite a debate but I have just read her book and it got me thinking (always dangerous!)......

in her book The Contented Little Baby Book, she advised a mother to leave a five month-old baby to cry for three hours

cruelty in a middle class disguise imho
    verry sinister...

for legal reasons i should add allegedly etc. these r not the views of the mse site;)

IME my bf technique had nothing to do with achey nipples. they ached for 2 wks then were ok. by textbook standards my dd is not latched on 'properly' but she would not get all of my areola in her little mouth
she has gained a kilo in 2 months somehow...;)

Also - as this is mse (!) I'm looking for some costs advice and recommendations:

    1. I need to stock up on baby and mum toiletry essentials. Am I better to go for Boots for choice and advantage points or do you find the supermarket cheaper?

    2. I am NOT buying or wearing those hideous paper/disposable pants. SO going to buy some really cheap cotton pants - any good recommendations on fit/place to buy? I keep hearing about primark, but haven't got one in Eidnburgh yet.

right - you may now resume idle chitchat about christmas decorations, cars and comedians. Oh and I like Michael McIntyre too :D

Welcome to the Pregnancy Ladies Michael McIntyre Appreciation Society! :T

I didn't stick with one philosophy with Poppy but took bits from here and there which I liked the sound of. I also found the Parenting Club thread invaluable and Poppy has slept thru from 8w :D. I'm a stickler for routine and she is in bed by 6:30pm....then I know the evening is mine! ;)

I bought cheapo 'bellywarmer' knickers from Tesco and I threw them away afterwards. I also wore two Boots mat pads AND two pairs of knickers to be extra secure .

I have just received a Boots delivery of 10 packs of size 1 Huggies for the grand old sum of £10 (plus £2.95 delivery!!! :D). They are usually £3.75 each . There was a glitch a few days ago and I didn't think they would honour the order at that price but they have :T. Now, I know that baby won't use all those size (plus the mountain I already have :o) but I take advantage of any offers with Boots/Tesco for points/deals as my local Asda will swap them without a receipt ;).

Baby toiletries seem to last f-o-r-e-v-e-r! You only need a tiny bit each time and I still have lots unopened from when I had Poppy.

    xx

    hi guys

Congrats FG half way eh? great!

I had some more bleeding last night and I thought "thats it" as it was bright red with clots / cramping and heavier than my continuous spotting, really prepared for the worst. Rang in today and got a scan this am and all is well
I just got a collection of blood in the Uterus but not in the gest sac. Baby has grown as expected since scan 2 weeks ago (even gained 2 days!! or was it that they got the weeks wrong?!!!) haha. very relieved as really thought it was over.

    MW tomorrow nearly 9 weeks!!!!

    have a good day guys
    xx

can you tell us more Krystaltips? My midwife suggested that cabbage leaves are really good but to have some lahnisoh (sp?) too. Apparently you don't have to wash it off before baby latches on. I know that technique is what really effects nipples, but can imagine that as it's a totally new thing for me that some help will be needed before I'm an expert

Cabbage leaves are recommended for engorgement, if you have too much milk and your breasts become swollen and hard, not entirely sure why they work but they do... But there are other things you can do to relieve short term engorgement before you have to dash to the fruit and veg counter. Some information here: CLICK

The midwife really shouldn't recomment you get things in in preparation, it's like setting you up for failure really..(imho)

Lansinoh is used for cracked nipples to aid healing, if you have plenty of support with latching the baby on and checking your positioning then breastfeeding should not hurt and your nipples should not crack... But that would be in a perfect world and the breastfeeding support in this country is far from perfect... So if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of cracked and sore nipples, changing positions will still help, moving the baby from the position that's caused the damage can make a whole load of difference. To aid healing, leave your nipples exposed as much as possible, express a couple of drops of breastmilk and rub this into the crack (breastmilk contains all sorts of fantastic antiseptics and antibodies and many other things that make it brilliant) or if this doesn't work, you can always try a little smear of vaseline between feeds that will probably be absorbed before baby feeds again... Specialist nipple creams don't do anything more than this would do, they certainly don't improve the position of the baby so if this is not changed then the creams won't make a difference... Oh and they cost a ridiculous amount of money!

my bizzare unexpected homebirth story (baby born 18th november)
OK, I started getting cramps at about 9AM.
They got worst at 11AM, I came on to the net replied to some PM'S etclook.gif
As I logged off the "cramps" got worst, and more frequent.

At 2PM I thought *DING* this is definetly labourspinning.gifspinning.gif

I rang my husband, he said he was coming home now,I told him to finish up with work because (i thought) labour had only just started, and it would be a long while until anything happened yet!!

I rang my midwife but she was out on a visitdrunk.gif

I rang my mom, she had borrowed my sister her carwallbash.gif

I rang an ambulance as the pain was stronger and i began to get a strong urge to push!!!!!blush.gif

The operator was being so supportive and helping me with breathing techniques, I called my husband again....his phone just rang!!!

I rang my other sister, her phone just rang!!!

    where was everyone???wallbash.gifwallbash.gif

The paramedic turned up by himself, he was waiting for the ambulance too.

it took them 15minutes to turn up, by that time i was ready to pushblush.gif

AS THE BABIES head was coming out my mom, sister, nephew and nieces ran in my house thinking they were taking me hospital!!!nono.gif

the paramedic delivered my baby in my living roomlachen70.gif

who would've thought it was going to happen that fast/?

my husband walked in 5 minutes later and nearly faintedlachen70.gifHE WAS so upset that he missed the birth.ohwell.gif

my son is just beautiful, he weighed nine pounds!!!

we are all settling in nicely and my family is now complete
