I read lots of stuff most of which as suddenly disappeared from my brain right now  But I think it makes sense that once the cord stops it because the placenta has given baby everything it needs and stopping that means bub won't receive everything its ment to IYKWIM
I also think it will help with my skin to skin time as bubs won't be able to be taken off and weighed etc too soon as I didn't like that bit with Chris, I feel like that was why I didn't bond with him straight away (I reckon I had PND but I lied about it whenever MW or HV asked related Qu's - proof I'm clearly mad  )
The stuff I've been reading seems to suggest at least three hours after birth before cutting - it says the pulsing continues at the naval end of hte cord even when the visible pulsing in the middle has stopped - and some people report it pulsing for a few days after when the baby is fed! DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

i would have thought your midwife would be the person to speak to but as i am having my first i know very very little.0 -

Basically, it is the practice of not cutting the umbilical cord, and instead allowing the cord and placenta to naturally die and drop off from baby, after about two days.
You wrap the placenta in a towel with sea salt and herbs to dry it out and prevent smells, and apparently the baby is sensitive to it being touched.
Obviously not for everyone - but what do you all think?

As I said, I think it sounds really interesting and I'm quite tempted.
I have heard of it and wouldn't personally be up for it, but I don't think it would do any harm. Be careful if you have a water birth and actually give birth in the water, as when baby comes out when the umbilical cord makes contact with the air it naturally constricts, where as in the water is doesn't and thickened blood can pass through into baby if the cord is not cut...or something like that. I read an article about it recently.
Please do your own research, don't rely on info from me :rotfl:0 -
I had the cord clamped with all 3 of mine (DH cut it for 2 & 3 if I remember correctly) - no crying as a result on any of them (they all had good apgars too - 9,8,9) As to healing time, well one fell off in 3 days and the longest was 6.
Gas & air - love the stuff - doesn't make me feel drunk/ lightheaded (first breaths maybe, until you get the hang of breathing it in deeply and at correct time) I wouldn't say it massively eases pain but gives me something to concentrate on and it does help.
Pethidine - had with no 2 - didn't touch the pain nor the baby - no after effects re sleepiness etc. Also had with 3 (was hopeful it might touch the pain this time!) and didn't work for me but DS2 was sleepy that day (however they still let me out within a few hours as I was a 3rd timer and unfazed by the sleepiness and had expressed drops into his mouth without being told to)
Epidural - had with DD (undiagnosed frank breech) - birth plan was water birth with gas & air max - went out of window. Epidural was sent wrong way and didn't work (they didn;t believe me until I complained so much they had anaesthetist (sp) check it and he blamed me for fidgetting when he was putting it in!!!) He then gave me another one the right way - that also didn't reduce pain - but did take away my pushing sensation (until you have that you don't understand how powerful it is) Top ups also failed. Foe the emergency c/s they gave me a spinal block - which immediately made me vomit all over the operating theatre floor!
I'm planning g&a for this one. Peth doesn't work on me, nor epidural, so I have little choice. Can't do water birth cos of c/s.
Whilst I'd say think about pain relief and make a birth plan, it's amazing how these go out of the window in many cases. (like the issue of students - if you've been labouring a long time your dignity goes and you don't care WHO comes in to watch as long as the bloomin' baby comes out - preferably right that minute!!) I felt I'd failed as a mum in having first the epidurals and then the c/s - but I didn't. Do whatever works for you and don't dismiss anything at first - have preferences, sure, but you don't know how your body will handle the birth or whether there will be any complications (fingers crossed for none) Every woman is different, and the important thing is to have a healthy mum & baby at th end of it all
Oh - and I'd generally be regarded as earth mother type by many. I'm a complementary therapist & had a GP who was also a homeopath. Where possible (without endangering anyone) I'd choose 'alternatives' to 'Western' medicine - but I'm not a die-hard anti-medical-establishment person. Everything has it's place - which is why I practice 'complementary' therapies as opposed to 'alternative'

Feelie I would ask midwife just to see as I just found out by accident that in our area we have a few MWs that specialise in looking after "drug using mothers" - if you have one in your area they may also know about your situation
or do you have contact with a drugs councilor they mite have some kind of info
Ps this may help those in the birmingham area as well as you skinty link
ETA: Feelie I don't remember feeling drunk with the gas just sort of in my own world a bit like a dream, if it had made me feel drunk prob wouldn't have used it as I don't drink and don't like feeling drunk!0 -

Hey greent fab news about the results, bet you are so relieved! :j As for the above, well said! I didn't bother with a birth plan last time and haven't this time either! Its very much a personal choice so don't think I'm knocking anyone who has spent hours writing theirs. Its just things don't always go to plan where labours are concerned!
I plan to go in again this time with an open mind - I don't like needles, blood and the thought of a c/s scares me silly but its not as if they are going to just decide to do one just for the hell of it! As long as me and bubs come through it in one piece, that's all I hope for.
Last time I tried gas n air but it made me sick. I've since been told to perservere (sp?) as it gets better. I had pethidine despite being dead against it before labour. Personally I thought it was fab - I was on a totally different planet to everyone else in the room but in a good way!
You do realise greent that you are going to have to let us know the "colour" of your bump soon - just wait til the others start badgering you, you'll give in just for a bit of peace and quiet :rotfl:
Can't comment on the cord business skinty, only that DH cut it last time and he was suprised how tough it was!
How are you today elle? xProud mum to Matthew born 23/11/08 7lb 13ozand Rosie 12/01/05 7lb 9oz0 -

I've not been posting for a while but I am following the thread everyday.
Had my 20 week scan on 27th of October and it turns out Matilda is a boy!!:o I was so sure it was a girl but I am just as happy:j .
Needless to say he has had to change his name to a more appropriate Axel (for now anyway).
Hugs to all who need them and congratulations to all new mums and mums to be!!
Can't believe how fast it is going as I am 24 weeks tomorrow:T .
