skintchick - i was made redundant last week (at 9 weeks) which means I won't qualify for SMP either, just MA which isn't enough as I needed the 90% of salary for the first 6 weeks to afford me the time off I wanted. Anyway, after registering with a few agencies and being upfront about being pregnant, they all said don't worry about telling a prospective employer at interview or anything as it's still very early days and a lot of women wouldn't know by this stage they were pregnant anyway. They said seeing as you don't have to legally inform an employer until much later on about being pregnant, then there is no need to let it spoil the chances of getting a new job soon.

Obviously if you don't 'need' the money from working that's different, but if you do need to work then it shouldn't be a problem this early on.

Honeypop, I don't know if I've read that right, but it sounds like you are saying you are looking for another job so that you get the 90% of salary for the first six weeks.. You won't get that if you start in another job when you are already pregnant. You need to work for an employer for 26 weeks before the 25th week of your pregnancy (ie for a week before you got pregnant) to be entitled to them paying you SMP with 90% for six weeks and £117.18 (currently) for the next 33 weeks (9 months in total). Even if you get a job before your 25th week (when you legally have to tell them), you won't get the 90% for six weeks (unless they have an enhanced company maternity pay scheme). It doesn't matter that you don't tell them yet - they will go by the date on your MB1 form so they will be able to work out that you were pregnant before you started.

Apologies if I read it wrong, or if I did read it right and you already know everything I've just said :)

It is the same here - if you say you are bleeding you get a scan. I am going to pay for a private one though I think. It's about £80.

I'm in two minds whether to book one or not.. found a place nearby-ish where it's £75.

My GP basically said "what's the point? it only proves all is ok on that day.. what about tomorrow?". I suppose he has a point, but as I actually found out mine stopped at six weeks last time, I think I'd quite like to know if I've got past that this time (6wks on Friday).

I spoke to the midwife earlier (can't say I was that impressed with her - same one as last time but one minute she seemed to know exactly who I was and then the next it was like she had no idea!) who said that she wouldn't [be able to?] tell me when my scan date is until my next appointment (3rd Dec) and she'll aim to get my scan done at about ten weeks.

I don't think I could lie to get an early scan - I've been there and wouldn't wish it on anyone, let alone make it up!
  • Krystal - glad to hear that you two are doing okay.

Hi elle-gee, no i know that I won't get the 90%, I was just saying that I needed that to afford the time off I wanted when baby comes. Just going to have to work around that one now! Not too bothered about an employer knowing form the forms that I was already pregnant when I started with them, not like I can fake the birth dates by pretending it happened after I started hey!! I plan to tell a new employer while negotiating contracts after being offered the job so they know before I start but also can't really withdraw their offer by then. I know I can't really afford much time off now anyway when the baby comes so I'd be back at work before long and not too much of an inconvenience I hope.

You could say that at any point about any scan though! I want one for the peace of mind, or at least to know if something is wrong. Like you, I want to be sure I've got past the day when I lost the last baby (for me the point at which i began bleeding) and just to have a little reassurance that everything looks OK.

I'm intending to have one at about 8 weeks, so I should be able to see the heart beating as once the heart is beating the risk of mc drops to such a tiny amount I will feel much better.

I'm pretty certain Bubs' heart never got beating :(

Then it will only be four weeks to the hospital dating scan, and once we are past that I'm hoping I will have a reassuring bump.

Oh and your scan should be at exactly 12 weeks - my hospital last time asked for date of FDOLP and then booked me in for exactly 12 weeks on.

Back on private scans, there is place near me where it is done at a GP surgery by a GP and not at one of those vanity places as it were, so if there is something wrong at least I will have a proper medical person on hand to advise me. (Nothing will go wrong, nothing will go wrong, nothing will go wrong ... )

  • Had my midwife appointment today and blood pressure was fine so wont see them for another 5 weeks now.

elle gee - I had a private scan at 9 weeks after previously having a blighted ovum - I just needed to know that there was a baby there. I couldnt wait another 3/4 weeks for the nhs scan as I just needed to know.

My cravings currently remain at the flavouring off salt and vinegar crisps (wish you could buy it like a sherbert dab... But probably not that good for you...) and orange juice... Although 2 or more glasses seem to have a slightly adverse effect if you know what I mean...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

  • ssshhh...can you hear that???

It's the sound of yet another grown man crying because wifey has the most wonderful bazoomers and he's not allowed near them ;):D:D

bathbabe - do you have any small local bra shops (there is usually one tucked away somewhere in every town) or a co-op/local department store or debenhams? what kind of size are we talking?

    tinkerbell - congrats and welcome!

Thanks MFD - we have a Debenhams / John Lewis / H of F within a 40 minute drive (was always a JL girl before) so I guess I could try them. Don't know about small independents - will go on a hunt methinks. I was a 32FF before I got pregnant, now outgrowing my 38F maternity holsters - tbh the cups feel nowhere near big enough, and I just don't feel like non-underwire gives the same support I'm used to!

    And yes, you're absolutely right!!!!:rotfl:

Ive just booked a private scan for 2 weeks time. Im the same as you. The chance of miscaraige is before the heart starts to beat and once theysee a heartbeat they say the chance of miscariage is greatly reduced.

I'll be almost 9 weeks bythen so hoping everything will be okay xx

ps im paying £90 which seemed the same everywhere i checked x

You know those 'salt and shake' crisps, the ones with the little bag of salt in them? I'm sure you used to be able to get flavoured ones, but I've never found any evidence of it. Perhaps I just dreamt it up. Its a good idea though!

Re Private Scans - reassurance scans are £50 and £80 at the two places I've been. Neither are attached to a hospital or GP surgery, but they have a policy in place to deal with things, which they explain before the scan.
