You really can't compare the Army to the RAF as we do completely different roles especially when it comes to war fighting....so our training has to be different
Have you ever been in theatre?????
The last Lynx aircraft fatally downed in Iraq contained 1 x Navy pilot, 1 x Army pilot, 1 x Royal Marine door gunner and 2 x RAF passengers.
All theatres contain personnel from all three arms of the Services, often in mixed roles. It is utterly irresponsible to suggest otherwise, and therefore give people a false impression of what may be expected of them when they join up.

To get back to the original thread - I imagine that whilst Welfare services will be quite happy to help a mother who is missing her young lad after a few weeks training, they may be quite busy at the moment, helping those trying to re-adjust to family life after six months under fire or helping families cope with the loss or permanent crippling of a loved one.
    Just a thought.

she said she wanted to speak to the welfare officer - what's the harm in that?

why are you begging her not to get involved? can you predict what is going to happen if she does? no, I didn't think so.
When you ask a question, aren't you supposed to let them answer it, instead of you?

Yes I know that things change but consider the fact the dates of leave are set solid even before they start the trainging and the dates did not change they were just stupid enough not to be able to book flights. I do expect this to change when he finished training but it was not expected during his training these are monors as someone has pointed out already and they have duty of care.

you are so wrong I wrang his major and he was very pleased I had as he had already complained about the whole situation and was pleased as he could now make his complaint official so unlike some of you coment this is not meant to happen the dates are set for leave on training and the flights were booked wrong this is not like a job at waitrose

well as i was a training screw at winchester myself, i can assure you that at least 90% of the parents rang up....those recruits whos parents didn't, either didn't care and didn't turn up for their pass off, or they didn't have any. Joining the forces is like no ther job in this country.....please show me where a 15/16 yro leaves home for a job??

yes i completely agree that he has to grow up fast (and will do) and his mum will have to understand she can't have control over him....but he isn't actually in the army yet....not until he is 17, he can leave at any time he wants because of his age. He has not been blabbering he is a kid that has been away from home for the first time in his life.......i think a break is in order don't you.

He's NOT a soldier he training to become a soldier, two very different things.
thankyou for your support and for the numbers they were very glad I phoned the major had made an official complaint so this is not just me being silly or overprotective this is a mistake by the civi booking staff

His mother is stamping her feet because he isn't coming home when she wanted, well thats disappointing definately, but he is still coming home.

You need to see things from the lads perspective, not the mothers...If he started an apprenticeship at 16 with a civilian employer, like many do, I'm sure she wouldn't be ringing up his employer meddling. He will not thank her in the long run. Let him do his own thing.[/quote]

Actually my son rang me on the Sunday before he got to leave and said that it was awfull all his troop walked out of the gates on Saturday and he was just sat there alone waiting for monday to come,so he couls leave. He was wandering areound camp watching other troops. How is that me wanting my way. This situation has angered all his senior staff and it is not me wanting my own way whatso ever and your comments are uncalled for WHERE IS THE SUPPORT FOR OUR TROOPS obviously not with you

Lou it is :j MONDAY :j try and put the last few days behind you and concentrate on enjoying your sons time off this week.

In hind site it may be a good thing that you are working as he may be very tired and drained and need to catch up on his sleep, doing your normal day time things gives you all your evenings together to enjoy, you might not have got more if things had gone to plan

 wishing you all a lovely week
