she hasn't even managed to speak to anyone yet has she?
I wouldn't call that interfering in his career0 -
You may be in army, but I am not. Clearly we treat our recruits much better in the RAF and there is no need for parental interference...they are free to ring up at any time...however they don't..
Love the reference to the BBC program...some of the beebs finest work:rolleyes: with no editorial slant what-so-ever...It's no wonder parents worry with sensationalist reporting like that..
Furthermore where have I said he was blabbering? I'm looking at things from his POV...
His mother is stamping her feet because he isn't coming home when she wanted, well thats disappointing definately, but he is still coming home.
You need to see things from the lads perspective, not the mothers...If he started an apprenticeship at 16 with a civilian employer, like many do, I'm sure she wouldn't be ringing up his employer meddling. He will not thank her in the long run. Let him do his own thing.
You really can't compare the Army to the RAF as we do completely different roles especially when it comes to war fighting....so our training has to be different
The sad thing about that program is it only gave one point of veiw.....does a recruit who lasses out at an Infantry soldier (And i have to say our Infantry really are the best in the world and no I am not Infantry) does he really expect that soldier to just stand there and let him.....no.
Again your comparing a Job that has no comparison whatso ever......there is no job in this country that sends a 15/16 yro away from home to defend for himself NONE NANO NIL.If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -

Yes the training is different, but the basic principle is the same, the distances are the same and the disappointments with things like leave being cancelled/moved will be the same.Again your comparing a Job that has no comparison whatso ever......there is no job in this country that sends a 15/16 yro away from home to defend for himself NONE NANO NIL.
I myself have lived away from home since I was 17, and comparing myself to my sister who stayed at home much much longer I am very glad that I did. Its his life, his experiences, and he is effectively an adult now. If he wants to speak to his CO about his leave then that is up to him.
The job he has signed up for is not an easy one, he will get homesick, and lonely, but the sooner that he passes through this and just gets on with his career the easier for him it will be.0 -

I think you are a little out of touch with phase 1 training...they are very similar. Which is what the lad in question is doing.
I think you will also find that we (RAF/Army/RN) do not send 15/16 year olds away anywhere...you cannot deploy on Ops till 18. If you were implying that he has to fend for himself, that is complete rubbish. There is a well defined sysyem to look after recruits.{Signature removed by Forum Team}0 -

No, but she intends to...
I am simply begging her not to get involved/interefere/meddle/whatever phrase you like....
Let him be his own man.{Signature removed by Forum Team}0 -

I can assure you the training is very different....yes they all bull boots etc but the actually training is quite different
And i wasn't saying we're sending him away I'm saying no other job has a 15/16 yro leave home and defend for himself....at no point did i say send him overseas....he's away from home NOW show me another job that does that?
The well defined system that doesn't allow instructors (unless on duty) into their accom after 6pm (I can only speak on Winchester here)
And if it did look after recruits there wouldn't be programs on the BBC telling you about infantry recruits being beaten up and being urinated on......or recruits found with bullets holes in them....yes it may be a fine system but its the Training staff that actually fail to make it work!If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

she said she wanted to speak to the welfare officer - what's the harm in that?
why are you begging her not to get involved? can you predict what is going to happen if she does? no, I didn't think so.0 -

Well we're going to have to disagree, because these days the initial phase 1 training is very similar. I have seen it with my own eyes.
As to another job, plenty of young people go to apprenticeships in towns and other areas. Indeed my cousin has just taken up an apprenticeship with Perkins Engines in Peterborough and he is from Northern Ireland...very similar to this lad from the outer Isles and his training in England wouldn't you say?
Your continual references to a dubious BBC "documentary" add nothing to this debate and now to add references to bullet holes in recruits only serves to add to parents worries when they needn't be...
Do you work for the Sun or something?{Signature removed by Forum Team}0 -

She is interefering as she hasn't got her way, he is coming home a couple of days later, that is all...
As to what can happen...I see these situations on a daily basis, so yes I can predict likely outcomes...and I also no for a fact that most of these young people don't want mummy and daddy interfering like that....{Signature removed by Forum Team}0 -

No i'm not a reporter I'm actually a SSgt in a recce regt....and it adds everything to this debate....you say there is a perfect system in place when there is quite clearly not.....as with the whole of the Army (and i assume the whole of the forces) everywhere is undermanned and over stretched
And it will not reflect on his career in the slightest....yes it would be different if he was at his regt but he's not and along way from it.
I don't know why your hell bent on slagging people off? I couldn't care less what you actually think, I know exactly what i'm talking about because of first hand experience of it....as a recruit (though times will have changed since i was in basic...I did a years phase 1) and as an instructor.
I don't understand why people would think less of him purely because he wants (and his mum wants) him to come home at the same time as the rest of his troop.....As a training screw i had far more important things to worry about than think a recruit was blabbering... because he phoned home.If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
