Why should I change my SSID from the default?

This is a list of common ssid's

    http://www.wigle.net/gps/gps//Stat

If you use the default one, someone knows what equipment you have, can guess the default router password, may have an insight on how to attack a weakness in your brand of router. The SSID is used in the WPA hashing algorithm. Using default ssid's makes cracking easier when using lookup (rainbow) tables generated for well known ssid's. Choose a random meaningless ssid, and it is very unlikely that anyone has bothered to generate lookup tables for it, the default ssid's have already been done, and are freely downloadable. If you choose a dictionary word or common name for a key, and a default ssid, then once a cracker has downloaded 8GB of lookup tables, they can crack your key in about 15 seconds.

What is a crossover cable? It is similar to a CAT5/6 network cable, but two of the internal wires are crossed over. It is used for a direct PC-PC connection, as opposed to a PC-router/switch/hub connection

What are RJ45/RJ11? RJ45 - ethernet (network connector), RJ11 - small (us mini jack) phone connector http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registered_jack

I have a cable/dsl router, my PC connects to it, but I can't get on the internet. First make sure you are connecting to your router and not someone elses (start, run, cmd, ping -t 192.168.0.1 (or whatever it's address is), turn the router off and back on, it should fail when off if you are connecting to the right one. Then check these:

ping -t 127.0.0.1 (if this fails, (re)install tcpip)
ping -t 66.249.93.104 (if this works, and ping -t https://www.google.com doesn't it is a dns problem) try ipconfig /flushdns or check your dns server settings)

try switching the router and cable modem off, switch cable modem on, wait 3 minutes, then switch the router on)

If all these pings work, but IE doesn't see the tip about IE connections in part one of the FAQ.

If it still doesn't work, see the tips about registering your router mac address with your ISP, and the ntl tips link below, or use mac address spoofing on the router.

    http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101227.asp

wireless isolation stops two wireless pc's from talking to each other though your router, I have mine ticked (which is different from what the router config screen suggests).

the mac address is the actual hardware address of any network card, the thing that does the talking, so if you tell your router to only talk to xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx (your pc's mac address), then if another PC tries to attach to your router it won't allow it. (However mac addresses can be spoofed to workaround this, but this feature is usually only found in a linux (and maybe apple mac:rolleyes: ) hackers toolkit). If you get another PC in future, you just add the new pc's mac address to the list. If you have a PC already attached, you can add it using add under wireless settings, setup access list, available wireless stations, but make sure you add yours and not the neighbours.

double click the wireless network icon
    view wireless networks
    change advanced settings
    wireless networks
highlight your ssid (if it there)
    properties

    network authentication = wpa-psk
    encryption = tkip
    paste network key e.g. u$cv>c?|{UP iK]0Iz#hx\.#~R3X]1s66kT(99\8*h%o0ao~z+#[1b@\kd}-xuP

(make sure there are no quotation marks "'s or '''.s in this, if there are just type another letter over it
click connection, tick connect when in range,ok

click advanced, make sure access point (infrastructure) is selected, and automatically connect to non preferred networks is unselected, then ok everthing

This all assumes you are using Windows Xp to manage your wireless and not software that comes with a wireless adapter.

If you want to use WPA on Win98, then you may be able to use this
    http://www.wirelesssecuritycorp.com/wsc/public/WPAAssistant.do
(note the tick in the disable authentication box in the screenshot)

I've put my 63 character random encryption key in, but Windows is still showing the old one. Windows obscures your password with *******'s and it doesn't have a * for each of the 63 characters, provided that you've entered it properly (copy and paste it), your 63 character key is really there.

This tip has nothing to do with wireless, but will help stop Third party tracking cookies (from doubleclick.net etc.) from getting on your PC .. IE, tools, internet options, privacy, advanced, and tick block third part cookies, and OK. When you do malware scans, many products highlight and delete these cookies, this will stop them before they get to your PC..

Do I have an ethernet card already?

To go wireless on a desktop, you'll either need something like this:

    B0002LHX8O.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

    or something like this:

    NetGear-Wireless-PCI-Adapter_173__0710445_20.jpg

If you have neither of those, then you'll have to use one of these:

    cat5-cable.png

    plugged into one of these:

    Hi folks,

I am unexpectedly having trouble setting up my wireless laptop to do file and print sharing with my desktop (wired). Both machines connect to the internet ok (laptop - wirelessly, desktop - wired).

    Setup is as follows .....

    (1) Wi-Fi Router BT Voyager 2091 - Gateway [192.168.1.1]
    (2) Desktop PC (WinXP-SP2) [192.168.1.2] Connected via ethernet cable
    (3) New laptop (IntelPRO wireless) -WinXP MCE 2005 [192.168.1.3] connected wirelessly

Seems that with this mixed wired/wireless setup I cannot setup these two machines to see one another!!! I have tried both the wireless net setup wiz and the normal network setup wiz to no avail.

    Any pointers??

    Jools

PS Is the Windows Wireless Zero Config service vital??? -- I think it is turned off and I am using the defauly INTEL PRO WIRELESS Driver software instead. I could not connect to the internet unless I use this INTEL software.

Im not sure if Ive got it right, but if you do a Google for 'wireless router print server', there are several there, although I have no idea what they are like.
