A lot of great info in this thread, which I've just seen - We've had a wired network for sometime, but the wife got a notebook recently, so we had to configure a wireless access point. I got a lot of help reading http://www.wirelessnetworkus.com. Even tho it's a US-based site, it helped, esp. with some of the security terms, which were just gobbledygook to me. Notebook is now connected anywhere in the house!

    Hi
I have a problem with my lynksys network adapter. I had a message from windows updater that there was updates ready for my comp. I noticed that one was for Lynksys and thought nothing of it! big mistake!!!
from that point to cut a long story short I cannot get on to the internet!

Currently the adapter is connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found!!
The wirless connection status says limited or no conectivity.
"The problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer"

then when I click Details this comes up.

    Physical Address: 00-00-00-00-00-00
    IP Address: 000.000.00.00
    Subnet Mask: 000.000.0.0
    Default Gateway:
    DNS Server:
    WINS Server

I have replaces all the numbers with "0" but the rest is as you see it blanl!

    Can anyone help???

    Thanks

sorry for anny spelling mistakes I cant check it as I have to pick up the children.

  • Please help ...
I have got broadband using a ZyXel prestige 650R31 router and now I want to change to a wireless network. I have bought a Belkin ASDL Modem / Router G to use instead of the existing router.
When I plug the Belkin router in - it keeps showing the light that says cannot get an IP.
I have been trying to get the information off the ZyXel router to put into the Belkin one but I cannot seem to get to a login page.
Did ipconfig on the command prompt and the default gateway is showing as 192.168.1.1 When I try putting this into internet explorer - I just get page cannot be displayed.
    Can anyone help please ?

can anyone recommend a router & usb thingy i can advise my mum on. she is on virgin and although i know a wireless card might be better she has no chance of opening up her pc and doing it til my OH goes up after xmas and she needs to sort the wireless in the next couple of days! i am on the same broadband and have a belkin which is ok but drops out every few weeks and has to be rebooted.

edit: i've seen this one on pcworld but don;t know whether dlink are to be trusted?!

the house is pretty small so it won't be miles in terms of distance, they have just had the house altered so need to move the pc!

    Rach,
you don't say if you need an ADSL or Cable modem but the one you link to is cable so here is a cable one that shoul do the job connected to her modem.

I quite like the linksys kit : http://www.ebuyer.com/product/111400
And here is the USB: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/109708

The DLink you found is ok, if the house is small or if the machine is close to the router then will do the job fine, but imo the Linksys kit is generally much better and from experience the support is second to none!

    Hope this helps !

P.S. Security - one thing to remember about wireless. It is ESENTIAL that you setup some sort of wireless security AND password the rotuer with a unique password. Otherwise anyone can latch onto your network and with a little knowhow record everything you are doing (online banking being a worst case!), or plan a virus on one of the machines..etc! I see to many clients with open wireless networks and it horrifies me!

thanks grae-uk, it is for cable. i will pass that info on to my mum.
the comp will be in the next room to the router and it is just a small bungalow with a dorma floor so it doesn't have to go far...

i am with you about how many people have unsecured networks - madness! i will make sure she sets up security for it.
