Hi, First of all thanks to all of you who give such good advice here. Only found this through the 'wireless router for £35' thread but have spent some time reading through all the previous posts.
My problem is that I bought a Belkin 8021.11g modem/wireless router some time ago (quite a long time) and have never had it working. I have tried several times to set it up from scratch but I just get fed up with it and then leave it again. I am running XP on both desktop and laptop, they both have all the hardware required and everything does set up and fit together, so to speak, but it just won't work. Last time I tried I saw that the light under the phone icon stayed on. I looked it up somewhere and it says that the phone line isn't clear or something like that (sorry it was ages ago). Is there a way to clear this?
Sorry to be so convoluted and thanks in advance for any advice.

You should really start your own thread for your specific problem as this is a sticky for useful info. See if this set-up guide helps you. Don't give up so easily as it's quite easy to set-up wireless.

I have a Linksys router but all the ports seem to accept ethernet only, whereas my modem is working best on USB. How can I connect the modem to the router????

Your router is primarily designed for use with a cable modem (i.e Virgin Media NTL etc) .

If you're on ADSL (i.e. using your telephone line connection) you will need an ADSL Modem/router (e.g Linksys WAG200G) or another ADSL modem which has an ethernet output.

at the back of the modem there is an ethernet port and a USB port. On the router, there is only an ethernet port. Unfortunately, there is a problem with the ethernet connection so NTL have told me to use the USB direct to the PC, but how do I then use the router for the other pcs in the house?

I have looked at a lot of the threads but can't find exactly the problem that we are having with our wireless connection to a second computer upstairs.
    I hope someone can help.
The main computer is wired to a Speedtouch B68A2A wireless router and the second computer using a Belkin wireless adapter.
To get the second computer connected to the internet we have to go into Network connections> highlight Network connections 2 > then click repair, it then goes through a few processes then we are connected.
No problems when we are connected, I just feel that something is not quite setup properly, the signal strength is excellent.
Also when in Network connections there is a second 1394 connection connected, firewalled, is this okay?
I am not too technical minded so please keep replies fairly simple
    thanks for help
