Tell us what make router you are using, so we may avoid buying it.

Routers do not fail all the time, or they should not fail all the time????

I've got agreement to use my neighbours wireless connection for broadband. I've got a dongle type adaptor but the signal is low so i've put it out the window on a USB lead. What can i do to make my dongle/aerial pick up the signal better? With TV aerials you can get higher dB gains and amplifiers etc. What can be done to make the best wireless aerial assuming it's already in its best position?

Yes you can get antennas with higher gains but unlike TV wireless is a two system, IE TX and RX. so you need to improve both ends for a good connection.

However this may already be the case, in that your USB dongle is the poor end.

But if like most it does not have a removeable antenna unles you change it you are stuck with it.

If your neigbours Wireless router does have a removable antenna then this can be replaced easy with a 5Dbi to replace the standard 1dbi

Often it is not the power that is the problem. MAke sure you are not on the same channle as another close WAP. download the free tool netstumbler to see how many WAP are around then choose one that is not used if you can.

Also if you can use Channel 1 do as you will get a tiny tiny increase in range on this channel.

If you get a reduction in signal on Ch1 then it may be a problem with wireless AV being used near you, or Bluetooth or DECT phones. In this case got the top (say channel 13) if free

If you want to get more powerfull cards then https://www.solwise.co.uk is a good place to start

    IMPORTANT foot note

UK Radio LAW means no more than 100mWatts (20dBm) EIRP from your setup

YOUR EIRP = Wireless Router Power + Antenna gain - losses (eg cable)

    EG Wireless router 19dB + 1dB antenna = 20dBm 100mWatts

Most UK off the shelf routers are only 50mW and clients can be as low as 35mW

    belkins are the worst.

and they do fail often - not just belkins either

    Hi There
    Looking for some help please.
I have a Wireless-G ADSL Gateway Kit For Notebooks (WGKPC354G-UK). I have it connected to my desktop and it is used by my laptop in another room.
When I try to disable the connection on my desktop I get an error message saying
IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DISABLE THE CONNECTION AT THIS TIME. THIS CONNECTION MAY BE USING ONE OR MORE PROTOCOLS THAT DO NOT SUPPORT PLUG AND PLAY, OR IT MAY HAVE BEEN INITIATED BY ANOTHER USER OR THE SYSTEM ACCOUNT.
This means that I am connected all the time, even when I don’t want to be online.
My laptop is able to disconnect when it wants.
I am running WindowXP on both machines.
    Any Help greately appreciated

    Thanks
Sorry if this is in the wrong place

I'm really sorry, i am just really confused by what I need to buy...

I currently have a clone PC plugged into broadband by a wire....

I have seen portable (wifi) MP3 players that can detect the MP3 files on your PC and let you play them through your stereo or in fact anywhere around the house (with speakers I guess??)....

    Anyway, I am trying to get my head round what I need to buy and am guessing I need to get;

    1) a card that goes in the PC
    2) one of those wireless MP3 things

Do I have to get a different modem or just a connection??

Can anyone help as this is an idea for a bday present so need to get this sorted as soon as poss.....

also (re: above post) - how do you secure your network, is it just a case of password protecting it??

e.g of what I am thinking I need to buy:

    1) http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/459034
    2) http://www.wifigear.co.uk/netgear-mp101-wireless-digital-media-player-p-52.html?osCsid=5f5d666956cf01a62bfcd95c3c291095

You don't set up file sharing on the router, you do it on each computer that you want to share files from. See Windows XP Simple File Sharing.
