  • Hi there

I'm new to the techie board, I have a question if anybody can help...

I have a PC which is connected to a modem, using broadband
I also have a laptop, with my dongle ( i have just been given this by OH)

Is there anyway that I can marry the two up, so I can use the net on the laptop, I do not have a router........?

    Any help would be appreicated.

    Many Thanks
    Gizmo

Just a small point when asking questions like this... can you, (and everyone else), please tell us what software and hardware you have, i.e. Windows XP operating system and a Belkin abc123 dongle or whatever.

Anyway, it sounds like you need internet connection sharing so, in the absence of any specifics, have a look at these and see how you go on.

Essentially what you're doing is allowing your laptop to connect THROUGH your desktop machine so, by definition, you have to be able to connect to your desktop machine. You can't do this if your desktop machine hasn't got a network card of the same type as your laptop. Again, you haven't told us what desktop machine you've got.

TBH, in my experience, it's sometimes easier to just buy an ADSL modem with wireless capability but see how you get on.

  • Hi,

    Not too sure if this is gonna be the right forum for this question;

I have a Dell Latitude D600 laptop with
    Intel Pentium M processor 1500MHz 239MHz
    512 MB of RAM

I have disk space of 27.9 GB I only have 774 MB left.

I am looking to improve my laptop. I have been told by a friend that all I really need is more disk space and has recommended an external hardrive.

Whats the best one out there and I am looking if possible for a wireless one which I could access from any point in my house.

    Thanks-

  • Ok, this might be a little tricky if you're not familiar with your wireless router's settings, or might be old hat if you're a geek like me, but having come across loads of properties that have 7 or more wireless networks within range I think it might be useful to say:

In the interest of saving (albeit a small amount of) energy, and to prevent unauthorised access to your wireless network (more important), it might be worth tweaking your wireless router's range by lowering the signal strength.

Obviously, if you use your wireless devices in different places, then you'll need to experiment to find out what setting will ensure full coverage without beaming wireless signals across to your neighbours over the road.

I currently have mine on 25% power and still get 'very good' or 4/5 signal strength when furthest away from the router, inside our flat, and that's having to go through a few solid brick walls too.

If the naughty wireless network hijackers can't 'see' your network because the signal isn't strong enough to reach beyond your property, they cannot connect wirelessly.

Especially important and useful if you're living in flats, as I know of many people who (illegally) hijacked neighbour's networks whilst they were students (and probably still are).

Oh, and don't forget to turn your router OFF when you're not using it. ;)

    Hope this is useful!

I have a holiday house which I use occasionally. It is right on the edge of a free hotspot. If I go out of the house I can get access 24/7 but not always from indoors especially when it rains. I don't like sitting in the rain with my laptop and umbrella. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400 running XP. As such it has a built in wireless connector. Does anybody know if I can attach an aerial or something to increase sensitivity, and, if so, to where on my laptop? TIA
    Something Really Interesting

If you use the built-in aerial I wouldn't have thought so, (but check your PC documentation to be sure, obviously), but it might be worth buying a cheap USB wireless connector and a USB wireless extender cable. My dad bought one of these sets...

    http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/362255/BELKIN-G-WIRELESS-CABLE-ROUTER-AND-USB

and it had the extender cable included. I haven't looked but it should be possible to just buy the USB wireless network dongle and the extender cable without the router. That moves the wireless connection out of the range of the interference from the PC and should improve reception.

You'd have to set up the network connection again, obviously.

    Hi there,
I need some help and please guys you need to put it in stupid language for me....I only just found out what an IP address is.

I have a laptop upstairs that I am trying to set up with a Dlink DL 524, now it was set up while ago and then the computer that was upstairs died and all was disconnected and only downstairs without the router.

Now, tried to do it today and it is asking for a net work key (is that a password???) yeah right! as if I can remember. I pressed the reset button and tried to go to http://192.168.0.1/ but that won't play ball either....... so what on earth do I do now???

Reset button pressed but unable to reset it....my IP starts with an 82. I think but then I really don't have a clue

    Help :):(

The phrase 'won't play ball' doesn't actually mean anything, does it.

Do you mean it couldn't find the IP address of 192.168.0.1?

How do you know the router isn't being reset, (as you say it isn't), when you press the reset button?

Haven't you got the documentation that came with the router?

What does the phrase 'and only downstairs without the router' mean? Do you mean you had a PC connected downstairs that was connected directly with a modem of some sort and wasn't connected through the router?

In any event if you click the link below it should, (hopefully), give you the setup guide for the DLink router.

    http://www.myacrobatpdf.com/8429/dlink-wireless-router-dl-524-setup-instructions.html#

Click the 'Get the file here' link. This file is in PDF format so you'll need a PDF reader like adobe acrobat installed on the PC you're using.

By the looks of it it appears you might have to use a network cable to connect to the router directly to allow you to set up the router to allow wireless connection. Once you can get connected to it we might start making some headway.
