Hi and welcome home to Girly Pink-Winged! Your Mum has missed you!
Bootsalebabe - try Olbas Oil in the steamed water - I find it's very effective. I hope your cough gets better but, if it's really chesty, a visit to the doctor is probably in order in case you have a chest infection.
Well, back to the chores! I was just dusting the desk and thought I'd check up on you all!

I'm after a bit of advice now please, no not facebook again, I've given that up until my mate turns up to give me a crash course for dummies! lol!
dd3 is in year 3 and her teacher is leaving. She had the same teacher last year, and she worked 3 days a week, on the other 2 days the head teacher took the class, well they had specialist french and music teachers for one of the mornings.
Now that the teacher is leaving, a new teacher has been appointed and will also be working 3 days a week. On one day the new head will be taking the class, but on a Wednesday they will be taught by a classroom assistant - she has done an extension course (not sure if that's the right term?). But apparently the head has to say that she is teaching them that day as this isn't really allowed.
I know several of you work in education, so before WWIII breaks out and the local authority get a million calls, is this appropriate and is it allowed?GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -

No not just you:D We had this for each of our 4. It seems madness to me:rolleyes: Headteacher couldn't quite explain to me how missing half a day for a dental appointment would wreck DS1's education, but 2 weeks work experience would help him to pass his exams. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -

All teachers have time out of the classroom for PPA Planning, Preparation and Assessment. The Headteacher has authority to arrange appropriate provision for that time. Yes, a classroom assistant who has undertaken a course (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) is an appropriate person. So too are specialist subject facilitators such as Sports Coaches and Musicians (who may not have a formal teaching qualification). The children already know the Classroom assistant and will generally prefer to have him/her rather than an unknown substitute teacher. Most primary schools arrange this and it works well in most cases. You can always speak to your Headteacher if you have concerns about your child's education. How the timetable for the class is arranged is up to the Headteacher. There is no law against a classroom assistant taking a class to cover PPA time. Some schools will have a specialist qualified teacher (ie language or music) who will take every class sometime during the week. Other schools will have the classroom assistant taking his/her dedicated class whilst the class teacher is planning lessons elsewhere.
Hope this helps0 -
Morning all, omg I just wrote a really long post which didnt appear:mad:
MUMMYSAVER the answer to your question , whoops just seen MEs reply which is correct, but please bear in mind the person covering your childs class isn't a qualified teacher. At primary school I feel they can get away with using HTLAS now and then to cover classes and deliver, not teach the work. However at secondary level cover supervisors are being used excessively as a money saving exercise and pupils results will suffer, as these people are NOT qualified to teach the kids, and the system is being abused:o I used to see it every day, when there was work for me that is:(
Anyway i'm scared of getting signed off again so quick HUGGLES AND CONGRATS where they are needed, i'll come back later to rant more:)"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

Thanks ME and Candy for the speedy replies!
There are only 70 something children at the school, they have 2 full time teachers, dd's teacher for 3 days and the head teacher. It seems an excessive amount of planning time to have an assistant teach all day. And she is only covering one class, I'm sure teacher's don't get one day out of five to plan lessons?!
I think I shall have a chat with some of the governors this afternoon and see what they have to say. Whilst I don't doubt that the lady concerned is quite capable, she is actually a neighbour, she is not qualified to teach a class all day imho!
As you said Candy, it feels as though the system is being abused a bit, if the old head didn't need to do it I'm not sure why this one does. Plus the specialist teachers are coming in as well, but during the 3 days dd's normal teacher is in! So surely that counts as planning time? Hmm shall have to make some notes!
Watch the news for stories about exploding spires, we are all in the church this afternoon, and several parents are really het up about it!GC Oct £387.69/£400, GC Nov £312.58/£400, GC Dec £111.87/£4000 -
Mummysaver yes they can do it (use a TA) but should they well thats an entirely different matter............ The TA has a very important role in school now but are not qualified to teach on a regular basis. Huge debate about this on the TES website. There are an awful lot of teachers that cannot find a job and would welcome even two days permanent work each week. Could say more but won't at the mo....
Pen Pen am in total agreement with you re your daughter. Very late and very long. Just asked DH and he said in his experience schools that do have their Y11's undertaking work experience have them do so for 1 week.
Am still trying to work out M6/M1 dilemma Still not ready but have the industrial quantities of slap ready to be well slapped on!!!
