An Old Style gesture of support for Martin

Full support to Martin and his team from me, too. The OS Board has become part of my life, and maybe it took an 'incident' like this one (didn't see the interview, though) to make us all realize how lucky we are to have this site and this nice community - if nothing else, it gives us an opportunity to show Martin how much we appreciate his work! With the credit crunch crunching us all along it is going to be more invaluable than ever....!"Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

Without this site, my family's life would have been harder this past year. Ive lost my job and had a massive operation, and without the money saving tips from on here i wouldnt have been able to sort the finances out so well. I watched the interview and to me it makes the interviewer look daft. It is like he has only been told one thing about Martin and expects him to know everything that will happen in the financial industry.... In our house Martin is a god and now im spreading his word around the mums at school and now they are turning to this site. So thank you from a lot of mums in stoke on trentSealed Pot Challenge - No 1520Want to be debt clear by June 2012:j0

I didn't watch the interview, and don't have any money invested or any substantial savings but from reading Martin's emails am well aware of the maximum amount you should have in each bank.
However, if it wasn't for this website I would be drowning in my debt, wasting hundreds of pounds a month on needless grocery spends, huge mobile bills, unnecessary purchases etc. Instead I found a way to deal with my debts and have currently paid 25% of them off (something I never thought I'd be able to say).
I have found support, advice, practical help, recipes galore, cooking and cleaning tips, moneysaving recipes, ways to use up leftover food etc etc, as well as tips on where to get cheaper eggs and other food in my local area, all from being on here.
I have also managed to prepare for this winter with blankets, hot water bottles, storecupboard food, so currently don't have too many huge worries about our immediate future.
I have also read other ways that we could cut back if we had to and given it lots of thought so feel prepared.
So thanks to Martin for setting up these forums and for everyone else who contributes.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -

I have only just watched the interview and TBH I dont think it was that bad and didnt make Martin look bad. If anything, it pointed out that anyone who had savings of more than 35k/50k in one bank had been warned repeatedly to spread their savings out and it's their own fault if they had done otherwise.
Yes, the interviewer was argumentative (sp) but thats his job and Martin held his own and was consistent throughout with his valuable advice as always.
Keep up the good work Martin!

Have to agree with this - any media interviewer will give the "expert" a grilling. Martin did very well to explain his perspective.
Did anyone understand why the solicitor put all that money into one accountI thought that was one of the basic rules of investment - spread the risk around

I didn't see the interview, but I have been reading the many obviously angry but extremely nasty posts directed at Martin personally for the HiSave fiasco. Apparently he is soley to blame for both the bank's collapse and the fact that so many people invested their savings there. I hope these people are now eating humble pie as it seems that many local council and other public bodies have also invested in Iceland - did they get their advice from Martin? Um, no - from experienced professional financial advisors actually, which is something Martin has always made clear he is not. Unfortunately, investing money is a form of gambling, and sometimes the tables turn against you.0

Martin is a moneysaving expert not a mindreader with a crystal ball!
I am pleased to say I have never been in debt, and this site goes a good way to helping me keep it that way.
Thank you Martin. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I'll add my name, any advice on this site has caveats as does any financial advice, even from IFA. No-one is made to invest their money in any particular scheme, its your choice. I wandered onto the Savings board the other day and saw some of the messages that the OP mentioned and I couldn't believe the ingratitude of some people. I know that if you've got money in IceSave etc etc then you will be at your wits end but if you think Martin is to blame then you have been a visitor to this site and I don't know anyone who has visited this site and not benfited as the many examples above show. To turn around and blame the advisor who gave you the best advice available at the time is shocking and I REALLY hope that Martin is not too disappointed with his forum members, as they VAST majority do not think this way.My heart goes out to the members who are stricken by the crisis but if they followed Martins FULL advice they will have spread their risk around various institutes to make sure they are under the compensation level (currently £50,000 AFAIK) and the money will return eventually. MSE is my favourite website and OS forum my natural home, I wish everyone the best in the difficult times and remember we are a weird sort of family but there will always be an ear for you here and maybe a bit of advice.0
