Tesco misprice policy discussion area II

  • I read this forum with amazement at the lengths some people go to, to get as much as possible for free from Tesco.

    - Some people visit upto 3 stores in one day, buying the same products (why would you want 3 cd's of housework songs!!!!!)

    - Some people buy 10 packets of Mackerel??????? 10 packets??????

Tesco are insane for keeping this policy going and in honesty are a enemy to themselves. If is a very customer friendly, fair policy and I think it is disappointing to read the lengths people will go to, to get one over on Tesco....

Tesco WILL ban people who become known to them for regular r&r's and let's be honest people, there is an element of fraud involved, when you intentionally are looking for products which you expect will end up being wrongly priced.

  • I nearly always shop online so I do not have the oppertunity to use Tesco's r&r policy.
I think you are right sophie_mk about the haddock as an example it does seem extreme to me but who am I to judge? I do take advantage of the boots freebies and I do get multiples of items just because they are free and I don't necessarily need them (just like to try the ranges)
However, if i shopped instore at tesco's every week and had a good enough memory to remeber all the prices i would check the receipt and use the r&r policy gosh imagine if you bought a whole trolley load and found EVERY item was misspriced? I would certainly get my money back it would also make me more likely to check the receipts in following weeks and if a certain product is misspriced that my familly use alot then i may possibly get loads more than normal

Does that make me a bad person? tesco have the policy for a reason so it seems silly not to check and re-check your receipts

ask yourselves "If Tesco sold cars and you went to buy one with a budget of £20000 knowing they had this policy and you suspected some of their cars were misspriced, would you consider buying the misspriced car and taking advantage of the r&r policy"?

  • No, I do not think you're a bad person for operating in the way you suggested.

Having stumbled across this site I always vigilantly check my receipt and if I have a discrepancy I will question it. For example, I had an event last week in Tesco.... I wanted to buy an electric bottle steriliser. The shelf only had this specific type of steriliser out and the only price on the shelf was for £19.97 - the sterliser scanned at £40.00. I genuinely beleive this was unfair and was only looking for the item at the price stated, which after some discussion they agreed to. )They had the label for a microwave sterliser displayed in error - note though that they had no microwave sterilisers and had stocked the shelf with electric ones.

My main point is this, I did not go into tesco and purchase something which I had not intended on buying, in the hope of getting it free.

I also make the most of the deals at boots with vouchers etc... and infact find the staff are always in agreement that "that's what the vouchers are for". There is no self scanning or sneakiness involved in boots and I do not consider taking advantage of there genuine offers to be the same.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Happy shopping!!

    I know I would

If this were to happen, and your entire trollyload of shopping was mispriced, you would be well within your rights to claim on the R&R policy....however i can be pretty sure that your trolley would not contain 6 of one title cd or 5 dyson hoovers or even 10 packs of mackerel. And i cannot think of a person in the world that wouldn't try for the free car.....but i can equally think of people who would try for 6 or 7 cars!!!

and no, it does not make you a bad person for exploiting a policy that is laid down precisely for customers such as yourself and sophie_mk.

As i have explained before, the posters are printed externally and therefore when prices change at short notice, or if incorrect information is sent to the printer, these cannot be changed at short notice. Thus the prices on the poster were / are wrong. I cannot defend those stores that leave the prices without checking them, it should be a basic requirement.

Incidentally, the poster isnt there to highlight offers, it is there to give the various chart positions, it just happens that there are some prices mentioned on it (albeit that they are usually the wrong prices!!)

I totally agree, it is a mistake, and it is unacceptable when it is not corrected. I do not make tesco policy and if it is the decision of head office not to reduce the prices to match the poster then there is nowt i or anyone instore can do about it. I cannot defend the indefensible however. If the poster is not checked instore then the relevant store should be shown the error of its ways however that may be.....Just to turn it around for a moment, if the price you were charged was lower than advertised on the poster, would you insist on paying the poster price????????

At which point did i accuse YOU PERSONALLY of fraud? This is not the first time you have chosen to be abusive and i even tried to help privately which you chose to ignore...your choice, but i know who i am more comfortable being!!!!

In response to your comments on the cd posters -
it is fairly obvious that the prices on the poster I referred to were correct and the tills were charging the wrong amounts. Why? -
    1. The poster was for w/c 26.12.05 - you will find that a number of retail outlets reduce their prices at this time of year. It's commonly referred to as the January sale.
    2. As previously mentioned, these style cds often have a short shelf life - who wants Essential Hits 2005 at £15 in March 2006, for example? In addition, HMV, Woolworths, Virgin and others had also reduced the price on various combinations of these cds. It's very common to see the same product reduced at the same time in different stores - it is often a supplier rebate / discount to their customer.
    3. The lower, poster prices actually matched the SEL in the other stores of theirs I happened to visit in that week.

I spend a great deal of money on cds at Tesco and other outlets. If they are going to overcharge me on 60% of the items that I purchased I'm not just going to walk away. Most people will not be interested in how their posters are produced, they will just want to pay the advertised price for the products they buy.
  • ok so what if the vicar went into Tesco's to buy food for the local homeless shelter and accourdingly purchased
    20 packs of toothpaste
    20 face flannels
    20 deodrant
    20 packs toilet roll
    20 duvet sets
having checked mse firstly? and who's to say these people are buying 10 haddock are not giving it away to people more needy?

  • Your last post made me smile! I like your wit!

I'm not here to argue with people. As I said previously, Tesco are their own worst enemy and of course it's only natural that people will take advantage. However, for my own conscience, I could not knowingly go in there and specifically pick out things, hoping for an R&R.

I had better go to heaven when I die!!

A poster that is printed up to two weeks in advance is almost definately correct but a computer system that can be updated daily is almost definately wrong......kind of doesnt make sense to me.

Short shelf life i agree with, however cd's are sale or return so the shelf life would not affect the selling price. As you stated, the poster date was 26/12/05...a minimum of two price changes have happened on entertainment since then so it is not the case that the poster IS correct.

I also would not walk away if i was overcharged on 60% of my purchases and i have no qualms with the use of the R&R policy in instances such as yours. And you are right, people do want to pay the advertised price...another scenario is the large hanging posters, they too are centrally produced, but i can also produce them instore....if the poster is wrong (which they often are) then i will produce one that reflects the current selling price and then display that one. We do not have the facility to produce new chart posters hence the instore maintenance of them.

  • I am sincerely not trying to make an argument from this, I am however looking at the situation from other people point of view as things are not always as clear cut at they would at first seem

  • I am a bit confused? Do you work for Tesco? If so, have you banned people from your store for persistant r&r's????
