Tesco misprice policy discussion area II

  • In order to commit an offence of theft (Obtaining Property By Deception) firstly your act needs to be dishonest and secondly someone needs to be deceived.

There is no dishonest act in paying for an item the store has priced itself, its not up to the customer to check all the prices. When you pay for the item the sales assistant goes by the price on the screen which is set by Tesco. You have no control over that so its Tescos problem not yours. They are not being deceived.

    Enjoy the goodies

If, as has been stated Tescos do this because of Trading Standards, why don't the other supermarkets - or do they?

They don't becuse they just make a bigger attempt to make sure the labelling is complete.
Tesco may like to change their policy now that so many people use it, before it was just the principle like when a company says find it cheaper elsewhere within a month and we'll give it free, you just don't bother cause you think they'll have checked. The reason they can't change though is it would attract attention and then the obvious question as to why wasn't their labelling right and then it wouldn't cost them to do it.
The reason it keeps trading standards away is when you go to CS about a misprice they usually end up giving you money back thus keeping you happy and giving them the opportunity to remove the offending labels before you get TS in, as demonstrated by the manager who recently said to me get trading standards to investigate if you want...after he'd removed the poster and refused refund!!!

  • Hi,

Suprisingly new to this (I'm a third year student...) and I'm a bit puzzled,

Are the misprices at all of the Tescos or is it usually just the particular store mentioned?

If a store is mentioned, then the person posting the misprice probably found it there and you are unlikely to get the same misprice at that store (unless they are very lax at removing the offending Shelf Edge Label or whatever).

The same misprice may well be found at many other stores around the country.

    Happy hunting.

Hiya, I've been reading the Tesco threads for a while - one thing I'm confused about is without going and buying loads of stuff I don't need, how can I find out what is likely to be a misprice - e.g. if there are 2 prices for the same thing up, is it worth thinking they might over charge me?
  • You could use the self scanner in larger stores?
I only have a small one near me when I'm away from home so I just wait for someone to post it on here if it is :-)
On weighed things, meats etc. the price they charge is normally the one on the packet and if the shelf is less your likely to be overcharged.

I quite often watch the price as it goes through and if it is the correct price just say I've changed my mind and the cashier will take it off. Alternatively if I have bought 2 I ask if it has gone through as BOGOF and then say I must have picked up the wrong one.
I usually leave the items I'm unsure of until near the end when I'm packing my bags and can watch the display easier.
Look after the pennies and the £££s will look after themselves

Not at all surprised - valid comment. Some of the best experts in the city are puzzled and in fact Mr T is scratching is head right now on how to get out of this without upsetting Customer/Client Relations. :T

You can not be committing deception as under the current law you can not deceive a machine which the tills are.
No Matter what you do there will be critics.
