It may nevertheless be better not to allude to them, much better. Why? Peoples identity and culture are involved here, are you suggesting they should not be allowed some individuality and celebration of their roots?
Of course there are differences. You only have to look at the line-up for the 100m at the Olympics to see that. However, these stereotypes can be very damaging, and considerable sensitivity is needed. (I think you've seen that your approach has provoked quite a reaction.) On the whole I think it is better to avoid any remarks about race unless absolutely essential. We live in a crowded island, and we should avoid doing things that upset our neighbours. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Like offering a price for a house, taking the house off the market, stalling the completion days with bizarre untruths, then finally arrive at completion day and say you are not going ahead unless you knock £40,000 off?Of course there are differences. Is that the kind of neighbourly behaviour you are on about?S!!!!horpe0 -

Well, you are obviously kicking yourself about this. I suggest lightening up. You'll hopefully come to terms with the resentment at some stage, as it seems to be eating you up..
I assume the £440k was a reasonable price for the house, as you accepted it? In any case, you did keep the house on the market after the offer, didn't you? After all, the second post on this thread says "remember its not sold until completion - in history there have been more offers than completed deals". Also, your EA warned you the sale might fall through, so I presume he was still marketing your house?
You also said:We are still happy with the price, didn't think I would be but I am.
The grounds have planning permission for another dwelling and we know the buyer has no intentions to build anything so he has paid, probably, over the odds for what is there but should get it back come resale time.
To add to that, prices were dropping very rapidly at that time, and maybe your buyers simply realised that they were paying over the odds?
The house you were interested in in Blackpool sold for £360k in December 08. You thought they would take offers on £339k, so it doesn't look like you have missed out on such a bargain there.
Anyway, I hope you get over this.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

I have bought a house at a bargain price and had almost forgot about this episode.
Two things I did do when I bought my house
1, Told the sellers I could not afford their asking price before I went viewing (which was true, they knew what my max offer was going to be and we went from there)
2, On completion day I handed over the some of money I promised them
EDITED to add
reference the marketing, it was on RM but under SSTCS!!!!horpe0 -
There is nothing wrong in noticing peoples differences.
I remember some loony lefty once telling us that if the first thing you noticed about a black person walking towards you was that they were black then you were racist. Utter tosh it just means that you have eyes.
In my experience Asians do tend to drive a hard bargain. It is something i have noticed and Dazco has also experienced. It is not racist to notice this or even to comment on it.0 -
Im sure if these people were reading this thread they would think it a hoot! at the end of the day they are 40,000 pounds better off. In fact if you go to morocco haggling is the name of the game. However, I dont think singling any group out on a thread is productive. Maybe our fellow men whoever they may be can teach us a thing or two on saving money.
And just maybe if we took a leaf out of their book we wouldnt all be in the mess we are with inflated house prices0 -

The way you are posting contradicts that, but anyway .....
I did edit my post a bit but somehow lost all the edits. The point I wanted to make was that there were quite a lot of posts on this thread warning you that gazundering and withdrawn offers were rife at the time (without any mention of race/religion, btw), eg:- remember its not sold until completion - in history there have been more offers than completed deals.
- I too sold in a week, untill my buyer pulled out. Hope you have more sucess getting through to completion.
- You must be new to this game. Come back and gloat if you manage to sell it at £475,000.
- You have to be realistic. The chances of a £1/2m sale going through without a hiccup at the moment is extremely low. The vast majority of deals are falling through. The few that do make it are being achieved at the cost of ruthless price cuts in the period between the survey and exchange.
- Id have to agree with this i have lots of friends that have tried to sell houses in the current state of the market and one had a buyer that messed them about so much it was almost as if they new they could keep re-net the price its definitely a buyer’s market and not a sellers at the moment..
- As for my house being sold, they buyer has given a deposit of £5000 which we keep if not completed by a certain date. So not all doom and gloom. - Assuming the buyer is using a solicitor they will have no problem in recovering their deposit when the time comes. Have a look at the small print. (You shrugged that one off.)
- At the moment, I am SSTC for the fourth time this year, if that helps give perspective.

I disagree, a word to be cautious cannot harm, can it?carefullycautious wrote: »Im sure if these people were reading this thread they would think it a hoot! at the end of the day they are 40,000 pounds better off. We secured our house because of "attitudes" be estate agents.
We bought in 2006, before the fall.
This was our max offer so we waited. Two weeks. Then we heard that our offer was accepted. TBH at the time we didn't know whether the other offer was true or a ploy to get us to increase.
After exchange, when we were measuring up, I asked the seller if there genuinely had been another offer. He said that there had and it was the same as our offer, but that the EA had told him that it was from someone "where that lot are known for reducing the price moments from exchange" so he had picked us. He said he never inquired what "that lot" meant as he thought the remark was tasteless, but at the end of the day he had to choose between two offers and so was led by the EA.
So thanks "that lot", whoever you are, thanks to you I got my house.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
