  • I know this thread is OLD but thought I would have a little rant myself.

I had a CC skimmed around 2 years ago and it played havoc with life whilst it was sorted.
Today, i am angered by Barclaycard after receiving an e-mail from them. The e-mail makes a point about the postal strike and asks you to follow a link to view your statements incase you don't get your posted version on time!
The link takes you to a page where you are asked to register your card details, DOB, mothers maiden name, CVV number etc.
My investigations show that this is indeed a genuine Barclaycard e-mail but has "Phishing" written all over it!
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to replicate the e-mail and the registration page and capture all the info needed to rip me off!
I searched in vain for an e-mail address for BC to forward the e-mail to and complain but no such thing exists on their site. When i click on links such as "Fraud Alert" on their site, it directs you to a page with NO advice, just scare-mongering and then asks you to buy insurance against fraud at £70 a year!!

I find their actions irresponsible in the extreme and playing into the hands of Fraudsters all over the world!
    SHAME ON THEM!

  • My bank are always sending me letters to check that I've not been defrauded. I think I get it a lot because I like to travel and i did once have a fraud issue.

Was the email personalised to you in anyway.

For example did it just have

Dear Valued Customer (Typical Phishing email)

    Or did it have

    Dear Bucephalas69 etc

Automated phone call from Barclaycard last week quoting 3 transactions made that day that had been flagged as dodgy by their system. Hadn't used the card in a few weeks so checked online and the pending balance confirmed that my card details had been defrauded AGAIN.

I was the victim of identity theft on my Barclaycard account in March this year where someone managed to change the registered address of my card. I had only had that card about 6 months as it had been replaced in August 2008 after being used fraudulently.

Would be surprised if my PC is compromised as it has regular formats, AV software and a decent hardware firewall. Otherwise one of the retailers might be dodgy but they're all big companies and I'd be hard pressed pointing a finger at one in particular. Any other ideas?
  • Basically Banks have got too big and they want to spend as little as possible on operations and as much as possible on the big wigs. So when things go wrong no one in operations really know how things really work as there is no one with more than a few years of experience working in any given department, who was most probably trained by someone with not much experience to start with.

It's not likely to be your PC.
Fraudsters are now targeting and exploiting big company websites or those where security is poor.
    Some examples are:

    Cotton traders
    Camerabox
    Bike related internet merchants
    World Pay transactions
    Animal/Pet related merchants
    La Senza

There are others. What is concerning that these websites have a lot of traffic going through them and will appear secure, but the platforms being used to process the card information are being compromised.

It's a fact of life that your card details are open to risk if you use them in a card not present manner but just remember
Use your Credit card for any Card not present transactions (apart from cash transactions of course!)

Checking my credit card statement online in December 09 I noticed an amount of £10.24 for ccbilleu.com which I did not recognise. I looked up the ccbilleu website and they seemed above board so I emailed them for more info about the transaction. They kept sending me emails asking for more and more details about myself and my credit card account so I referred it to Barclaycard who said they would send out a dispute form. Also I googled ccbilleu.com and found they are associated with gambling and !!!!!! sites.

The very next day after I had referred the matter to Barclaycard, they rang me to check a transaction - somebody had tried to spend £299.99 with Apple on-line and thankfully Barclaycard refused it. My card had to be cancelled and replaced.

First lesson - always check your credit card statements and query even small amounts you don't recognise as it could be the precursor to something bigger.

Second lesson - it's not the end of the world if there has been fraudulent activity - I cannot fault Barclaycard's handling of the matter. My replacement card arrived within 2 days instead of the advised 5. I returned the dispute forms on 18 December together with a print out of my emails to ccbilleu. I got a text from Barclaycard on 31 December to say the disputed amount would be credited to my account within 7 working days - and it was. The first time I used the new card I got an automated call to check the transaction but frankly I found that reassuring and they can call as many times as they like. They've taken a bit of flak on this thread so I felt it would be fair to give credit where it's due. No pun intended.
  • Tried to log on to Barclaycard's site last night and found that it wouldn't accept my password. Phoned them to discover that my password had been changed, my home address had been changed, and there were £1800 of pending transactions.

Found Barclaycard's whole handling of the situation to be a farce, and had to continually argue with them to get them to even bother to consider the possiblity of fraud.

I asked exactly how my password/address could have been changed by someone else and was advised that it was probably someone hacking their website.

So there you go, Barclaycard's own website isn't secure apparently! How reassuring!!!
  • Exactly the response I had from a lady in their Indian call centre. She could find *no unusual activity* or sign of fraud. How then, I asked could I be calling from the UK when my card was being used, at that moment, for in-person visits on an alcholholic shopping spree in Australia! She just didn't get that maybe I actually knew better as to when my card was being used fraudulently. Totally bozos, the lot of them.
