So, what I am asking is...

Would you (or anyone you know) consider dumping a dog because of money problems? If so why? What could be done to prevent this?

Is it just a symptom of our throwaway society, or is there more behind it?

Ted (see avatar) died just over a month ago. Nothing on earth would have made me give him away (bar homelessness).

We've got a kitten (& I've sent off a deposit on a second), but lots of the breeders I've rung to enquire about kittens said when asked the price "well, due to the credit crunch I've reduced them to XYZ" so it seems it has been affecting sales of pets & I've heard abandoned pets has risen too.

It's a disgraceful thing to do but unfortunately does not surprise me. Hopefully the dog ends up in a loving and safe home.
  • Dunno if anyone is interested but you dont have to win the lottery or even have any money to help... after talking to the lady who is now looking after Cagney and Lacey she recommended a forum, "rescue helpers unite", where people work together to try to help dogs, especially those about to be put to sleep in pounds.

They need volunteers to help by doing -
    1) home checks for potential homes for rescue dogs, and
    2) by helping transport dogs from pounds to rescues, and
    3) by fostering.

I dont have the time to foster at the moment, but I have offered to do part of a transport trip later this week, driving a staffy b1tch who is well past her PTS date on part of the journey from the pound to her new home!!

Yes, it will take an hour or two of my time, and potentially a tenner or so of petrol, but I think I will enjoy it and feel good about doing it, so its a win-win situation!

If no one had been kind enough to do that for the two oldies I found they would now have been PTS, so I think its only fair I do a bit in return.

It looks like a good way to help actually cos you dont have to sign up to anything regular, but I saw that about five people are relaying this girl to her new home, but no-one could do the section of the M1 which is near me, so I though I had better offer, otherwise she would be stuck and potentially PTS as she was on borrowed time at the pound.
  • My friends cat was killed by a rottweiller that was left out wandering the village last week. Nightmare. They heard a cry, ran out to see the cat in the rottweillers mouth. Apparently not alot the police can do 'cos it wasn't a person hurt. They can't even take the dog away. I guess they will when it's a child hurt!

I work with someone who is using the credit crunch as an excuse to get rid of her dog. I know for a fact that her personal circumstances have hardly changed since she got the dog (on a whim of her daughters). The dog is untrained and gets no excercise so whoever takes it on needs to put some work in.
She has told me that she's advertising her dog on the internet:eek: She has little or no concern where the dog might end up.

A dog can be kept quite cheaply and I'm sure many animal charities would rather assist in someone keeping their dog than rehoming it.

I wonder then if it's the genuine animal lovers who are getting rid of their dogs or people just using money as a convenient excuse.

I have animals and would rather go without things myself for their welfare, to me it would be like giving up one of my children.

    .

I hope the dog is neutered otherwise it may wel end up as a breeding animal and have a rotten life and just churn out more pups into an already over-populated situation.

What sort of dog is it? Would she be prepared to hand it over to a rescue (if a place could be found) or have rescue backup in rehoming it? PM me if you like.

It's a lab x staffie. I have broached the subject of rescue but believe it or not, she got the dog from a rescue centre herself and unfortunately is not willing to go down this route.

She is the kind of person who is very likely to get another dog sometime down the line too.
