I don't drive, so transporting would be out of the question (unless hub is off work, anyway)
I would be looking at exercising - either walking or playtime, and cleaning up. I don't mind mucking out or bathing animals. Except for cats. I still have the scars from the last time I bathed a cat :rotfl:
Fostering, I'd LOVE to do.....but I have a Bully myself, and four children. I don't think we're the ideal foster home as it's never quiet here. Rolo has grown up with it, and as such is used to it. I can only imagine how a poor rescue dog would fare
I'll go and sign up with that site now - thanks for the recommendation. I'll give the local rescue a call tomorrow, and see where that leads
I may be wrong but sometimes I think dogs are fostered so they can assess how they are in home environments, such as with kids/cats/other dogs/Granny? Assuming your dog is ok with others I can't see why they wouldn't let you foster if you're home enough! Good luck whatever you do, let us know how it goes!0 -

I do a bit of animal rescue voluntary work, but i know of a lovely lady near me who does greyhound rescue who has a house full of unwanted dogs and is constantly juggling home checking, vet trips, transporting dogs on death row, trying to find kennel places, answering the phone, feeding, walking & cleaning!
Plus all the emotional strain of having to say no to callous owners who want rid of their ex-racers today and threaten to kill them if a space isnt made!
Its a never ending, horrible job for anyone.
Glad you adopted 4 greyhounds anyway. I have a greyhound and a lurcher & they are both such sweet boys... so laid back & easy to look after and so loving!
MM x
They are great dogs. Plus they don't need as much excercise as I thought they would. They get tired easily! Chasing my 7 kids around the park for a hour or two knackers them out.
We have had 8 greyhounds over the years (I know cos the kids have pics of them all on their walls) and will probably only have these type of dogs again.

You haven't heard nothing yet.....
On monday I saw about 15 school children looking over a bridge near my house.
I didn't walk up and check, As there was plenty of adults their as well.
So was not alarmed by anything - Nobody shouted help?
Took it that they were on a trip or something??
Read the local paper the other day...
DOG DUMPED IN SUITCASE!!
Rescued from river by a passing neighbour.
Couldn't believe myself, That I had not gone to investigate, I SHOULD HAVE, But I didn't!!
To be honest It would not have been a nice experience.
The dog was put into a suitcase, Thrown over the brige weighed down with bricks!!
Luckily these people saw the dog, Smashing it's way out of the suitcase, And a local man waded into the water and helped it, He kept the dog warm until the police/RSPCA arrived.:j
She is ok now at a kennels in Ossett, Who have done a wonderful job with her.:j
If the case had been thrown in at night, The dog would almost certainly have died:mad:
What B*****D could have done this to an innocent animal.
I hope they catch them.
I know what I would do to them.......FLOG EM IN THE TOWN SQUARE for all too see as a WARNING!!  :rolleyes:Thomson 757 Man0 -

That's too good for them. For what I'd like to do to them, I'd get banged up for life!0 -
hmm, I dunno, I dont go with either option to be honest, I think we need to slow down the breeders and bring dog licenses back and introduce compulsory microchipping.0

I can't understand why people dump animals, but then I can't understand why people beat their wives and kids or take drugs, burgle people's houses, or drive when clearly drunk, either. The world is full of odd people. I hardly think that compulsoury 'anything' would make any difference to the situation.
There is a very clear difference between buying a pet, realising you cannot look after it and taking it to an appropriate place of care, and 'dumping' it out of the house.
If I couldn't keep my pet for financial reasons, either there would be a trip to the vets or a trip to the local cats and dogs home. Yes there would be a lot of tears, but there would never be a 'dumping'. But hey, I don't do any of the things I list above, either!0 -
about my fences, its a bit tricky, looked on garden law and i have to put a 200ft fence 9 inches in from his boundry line... so i'd loose garden space not a huge issues you'd think but enough to warrant me to think twice land regisrty rules say that if he made use of the 9 inches after7 yr s thre his.. i just feel angry that i have to loose land to him after he poisened my dog.
also i have to patrol to check he hadnt thrown any more "treats" over.
still keep looking the pound site, think i will volunteer instead.1. i'm bi polar.:rotfl:2. carer for two autistic sons.:A 3. have a wonderful but challenging teenage daughter. 4. have a husband that is insatiable. 5. trying to do an open degree.0 -
Hawthorn - I'm a volunteer dog socialiser for a shelter, and I think it's really great that you're thinking about volunteering. The shelter that I work at has kennel staff who do all the day-to-day feeding & cleaning stuff, and the volunteer's role is to give the dog the extra attention that it needs, as the kennel staff don't tend to have time to take the dogs out. I spend time with the dogs in their kennels, playing with them, stroking them, and training them, and generally trying to keep them calm, as the kennel can be a very frustrating environment. The volunteers also walk the dogs, and some of them do short-term fostering. I do around 4-5 hours a week, and I have a regular day so I can make plans around it. Many shelters also need people who can help in administration, finance or events, so I'm sure that whatever your skills, you'll be able to find a role that suits you!2015 comp wins - £370.25
