It'as the run up to christmas that's worse believe it or not... people "get rid of the old to make room for the new"... seriously!
They will dump their older dogs that the kids now have no interest in and get a "cute" puppy... then in a couple of years time when THAT'S boring they'll dump that. Or if they are going away for christmas it's easier to dump the dog than find kennels for it. And no I'm really not kidding!
Someone I know got rid of her dog a few years ago cos he was hard work, bear in mind she didn't train him at all so he was a handful, but it was her fault:mad:  !!!
Now she's just got her son a puppy and he's besotted with it, but I can't see her keeping it as she can't stick with anything at all. It's such a shame for the poor dogs:(:(

While I haven't read all of the threads on here,I've got the jist of them, and so our tale begins........

Our eldest daughter, who is 17,lives with her druggie boyfriend, and after a big row one day,she rung us to ask a favour. He had just got her a puppy,as way of an apology, but could we look after her for a couple of days, until they got over their troubles.

Well,as soon as I saw her,my heart just melted, and there was no way that I was going to let her go back to the stinking hell hole of a flat, where she wouldn't get any exercise, have her jabs, chipped etc etc,and if she messed, she most certainly would have been beaten.

Needless to say,Stella has become part of our household, and we absolutely love her to bits. She has had all the check ups, jabs, worming,is fully insured, gets a walk at least twice a day, either in the big field at the back of our house,or we take her in the car on a weekend, for a big walk, which she loves.

She is a cross mongrel, and is such a mischevious little so and so when she wants to be,but likes to sleep with the wife and I,when we go to bed.

She has entered 3 dog shows just for fun,and won numerous prizes, including best in show, and you could say she is a pampered pet.

She gives us as much as we give her,and she is such a lovely little thing, that she'll never be leaving this house, even if things do get a bit tough.

All this, and I always said we would never have a dog...........

Dunno if anyone is interested but you dont have to win the lottery or even have any money to help... after talking to the lady who is now looking after Cagney and Lacey she recommended a forum, "rescue helpers unite", where people work together to try to help dogs, especially those about to be put to sleep in pounds.

They need volunteers to help by doing -
    1) home checks for potential homes for rescue dogs, and
    2) by helping transport dogs from pounds to rescues, and
    3) by fostering.

I dont have the time to foster at the moment, but I have offered to do part of a transport trip later this week, driving a staffy b1tch who is well past her PTS date on part of the journey from the pound to her new home!!

Yes, it will take an hour or two of my time, and potentially a tenner or so of petrol, but I think I will enjoy it and feel good about doing it, so its a win-win situation!

If no one had been kind enough to do that for the two oldies I found they would now have been PTS, so I think its only fair I do a bit in return.
