Cheapest netbooks discussion

  • I was looking for a new laptop/netbook as my current one is slowly dying. I didn't want a full blown laptop as my needs do not really require one anymore, plus I have a desktop and works laptop for the heavy stuff.

I was doing some research and found that some companies offer refurbished deals.

An example would be the dell uk outlet store. They have 2 types of refurbishments one is a full refurb which is usually from someone who has returned a laptop/netbook/desktop that is in (near) perfect condition (usually returned within the 28 day period)
The other kind offered is damage repaired - scratches and dents. The computer itself is fine, just some aesthetic issues, never issues with the screens though.

All refurbished computers have a years warranty and the usual returns policies, they are also fully checked and reinstalled etc, just like a network Q car.

I ordered a mini 1011 (10v) netbook (1GB RAM, 160 GB hdd, 1.6 GhZ, windows XP) for £135 (plus VAT and Delivery ~ all in for £180) it was refurbished with no aesthetic dents or scratches.

If I was to buy the same netbook through the store it would have cost close to £250 before VAT (I don't know if delivery is included too).
Therefore I have saved atleast £70 on this. I can't believe I have only just stumbled on this. From now on I will check refurbished goods on everything I am going to buy.

New Netbook should be here in the next few days!!

I was also considering that one as the Carphone Warehouse had it at £299 2 weeks ago so it may be worth trying them if you are still interested.

I decided against it as it was too big for my needs at 11.4" so I got a Toshina NB200-12N instead which is only 10.1".
  • For people looking for advice on which netbook to buy, it might be worth checking out this article:

My only concern is that I have ordered the Asus EEEPC 1008 with Windows 7 from Carphone Warehouse for £229:

    http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/broadband/laptops-and-netbooks/buy/ASUS-1008-WIN7

But the invoice that they have sent by email says:
    What is a clearance offer?

By using clearance stock, we are able to offer you even greater savings

These mobile phones are either excess stock or mail order returns

These products might have slight cosmetic flaws

Each one has been inspected and comes with a full year manufacturers warranty
I do hope that this netbook is NOT a product with "slight cosmetic flaws", because I can't find anything in the CPW link saying that it is anything less than perfect which is being sold.
Thanks to all who post constructively.

  • Quick update, CPW offered three delivery options to me, either delivery to billing address, delivery to store or delivery to another UK address. I selected another UK address, order went through and then today I received two emails, one to say that it had been despatched and one to say that they can only deliver to a billing address. The obvious question is why do they give you three options if there are only two available?

Carphone Warehouse really are cowboys, not sure why I was ever daft enough to order from them in the first place. Now it appears that I have a product which possibly has cosmetic blemishes being delivered to my old address...

I would obviously have asked for delivery to store if I had known - although our local store said they don't have PCs delivered to them?
Thanks to all who post constructively.

  • ive never had a problem with the CPW, they used to offer the Compaq 110c (previous post in here said £199 from amazon) online as an introductory price of £179 (which was not bad) i didnt want to wait for delivery so went into the shop and they had them still in stock (even though the offer was supposed to end mid feb?!?) they are still there now, advertised at £179 the first one i bought had a temperamental screen, so after taking it back in and showing them, they gladly swapped it for another one, which did me perfectly for what i was doing. specs are as usual, 160gb hdd, 1gb ram (upgradable), xp home (i installed windows 7 on mine but only because i prefer 7 over XP) and i must admit, one of the best keyboards in most netbooks ive come across.

Ive personally never had any problem with the 10" screen, sure some flash apps were higher than the screen but putting firefox in full screen mode usually sorted that out.
  • Well my daughter rang CPW at Weston Favell but the snotty bag there said that not only do they not have any PCs at that branch, they can't order them in for you either. That was why we ordered it online instead.
Thanks to all who post constructively.

  • Just a word of warning - AVOID MORGAN COMPUTERS

I ordered an Acer Netbook from Morgan Computers (they send ou regular emails with special offers etc and in the past had a great reputation)

However i have since found out that the web site was sold in November 2009 and a company celled inkjets and toners now owns it
I did some checks online and they seem to be linked to Anthony Moxon - someone who had colourful hiostory accoring to the articles online

I ordered a £200 netbook which was delivered within a few days, but turned out to ba faulty - hard drive was dead

I rang Morgan and was told that it was nothing to do with them and that i would have to ring Acer direct, i pointed out that the Unit was dead on arrival and as such i was entitled to a refund or a new replacement unit but Mark at Morgan would not agree

When i asked to speak to his manager i was told there wasnt anyone!

after 5 calls to Morgan and 4 to Acer, the upshot is that the unit is now back with Acer being refurbished as neither Acer or Morgan would provide a replacement.

So i have effectivley paid £200 for a refurbished unit!!!

I have lodged a case with trading standards who are investigating

  • Linux, Mozilla and Firefox are all good and trustworthy names - they also mean free software.

Please don't think that Microsoft means better software - that is a false perception; but their products are expensive and once you've started down the MS treadmill, it's hard to get off...

Yes, some of the bureacratic organisations have been slow to get with the 'open source software' flow but in general everyone including the banks <yawn> are finally getting the message that free and open source software is the way forward and how things will be in future.

I hope that MS will join the Open Source community one of these days...they don't need the money and the software saving could make all the difference to new home businesses struggling to raise startup capital.
