My local ASDA were taking coupons today.

I don`t really think they`ve got a nationwide policy because even their CS comes up with different answers about exactly what the policy is.
It`s basically pot luck depending who you get at the till and what side of the bed they got out.
    Like ms alared says
if they don`t take them this time they will the next.

But then the same could be said of Sainsburys, where some cashiers will scan any coupons without looking at the t&cs as well (even though they have never allowed them unless you buy the product AFAIK). I am not saying it's right but it's a fact that it happens.

At the moment, you would expect to 'get away with mocs' more than any other time of year due to the number of new cashiers the Supermarkets take on. This is probably what's happening at the Asda you go to, and the one mentioned on the last page.

What I am trying to make clear is that Asda DO have a national policy and it changed recently to no coupons unless you buy the product. I am keen to get that message to any newbie couponers browsing this thread who may see the most recent posts and not know that Asda has changed its policy.

Just be careful out there, someone had the police called on them when trying to use mocs without buying the product in Sainsburys this year (search and you may find the thread).

ASDA are still accepting coupons and DON`T have a national policy,it`s all down to who`s on the till:T

This is a load of nonsense,it would have been in all the newspapers if this had happened and no supermarket would risk bad publicity over a 20p coupon:mad:
  • No offense to anyone, but it seems as you expect the supermarkets to take coupons off you, why should they? They are the ones doing you the favor by taking the coupon, even if you indeed purchase the product as there is no law saying that they have to take coupons.

No supermarket accepts coupons to do the customer a favour!!!!:rotfl:
    They accept them because
A They get the money back for therm PLUS a handling fee
B You give them your custom rather than going elsewhere.
Just like I went in a "foreign" Asda yesterday and handed over £5 worth of coupons. The woman said sorry we dont take them any more. I said "Fine, I'lltake my custom, elsewhere" and left the items at the checkout.

I then stopped at another Asda further on, took the very same items to the till and gave in the exact same coupons and they were accepted no problem.
Had they not been, I'd have left them too. I normally shop at Tesco but I like to nip in asda now and then.

There is no law saying they have to take coupons, no! The very opposite in fact. The stores are actually commiting fraud by accepting coupons for items not purchased. However they do it for their own benefit, not for ours!

I agree with everything you said in your post.

What food manufacturer,in their right mind, would consider taking a supermarket to court for fraud.

ALL supermarkets at one time or other have actively encouraged the use of coupons.

Asda have always had a hit and miss policy.
I`ve been refused coupons at one check-out,repacked into the trolley and gone to another check-out further up the store where they`ve took them.

In the newspapers - why? There is no publicity generally about these policies - thank goodness! It's something known by employees and known by customers via word of mouth or forums like this, it's not a policy that any Supermarket wants to shout about.

But a change of policy has happened at Asda, that's what this thread is all about. Asda should no longer be accepting coupons unless you buy the product. But I expect some stores & cashiers don't know so some people might still be lucky at Asda for a good while yet!

But it's hit & miss of course and too risky to tempt me away from Tesco & Waitrose where I know I am not doing anything wrong (my local stores know me & my coupons & their policy is to accept coupons whether or not you buy the product).

P.S. well said, Discodee, explaining to the uninitiated why Supermarkets have such a policy in the first place.

P.P.S. claire6hy, you will learn all about the policy which is still in operation at some Tesco & Waitrose stores, if you read the printable coupons (No Chat) sticky thread on this board. Welcome to the world of couponing!

I would shop more at Asda if I could be sure of the couponing use but as they are so hit and miss I don't go often. I live near a Tesco and they have been all over the place of late but had all my coupons taken yesterday which is the first time in ages and got lots of stuff for very little. Got loads taken today in Waitrose - they happily take mulitples as a rule and that is great for me!
