I never shop in Asda but after buying one of the coffee machines that the latest Asda mag has coupons for a free box of coffee pods I drove the 50 mile round trip with the coupons I had been sent by a friend who lives near by and has collected a few for me.

I had a right jobs worth on the till. First of all she said I had to buy the box in the picture, then she said I could only use 3 vouchers.

The vouchers clearly stated any coffee from the range and 1 voucher per box. She made me feel like a criminal with my vouchers.

She eventually called over a supervisor, who thankfully put her in her place as said what I had and what I was doing was quite correct and basically what was her problem.

I wish checkout people would not take a customers voucher usage as if it was them paying for the goods themselves.

I can see where she got the idea of the 3 coupons as that was the limit prior to the new policy when a customer was not buying the product, and although the colleague may have been mistaken this time, we regularly have mystery shoppers to check if our procedures are being followed correctly which tends to make you over cautious and whilst you are correct about the "I wish checkout people would not take a customer voucher usage..... etc" we do try and protect our bonuses by not doing the wrong thing!!! hey we all make mistakes, can i also say that most people only pick up 1 asda mag for the coupons and no doubt your friend picked up a few which in turn stops other customers enjoying the benefits of being a regular customer!

Just thought I'd let you know was doing my weekly shop today at Asda, and they were checking all coupons to see if the item was brought. They were tell customers that the change come in on the 3rd Nov and this was their policy from now on. I had a cereal coupon but as it said everything but rice crispies they would not take it.

They were really checking the coupons at my store but don't know if all stores will be as harsh.

yeah sorry nicky but its the correct product for the correct coupon regardless whether its the same type of food, again, we are only following procedure not really being harsh, gosh we do get a raw deal on these checkouts!!!;)

I think what I find the biggest problem with them changing their policy is that these stores were the ones telling us to use other shops coupons when they were trying to get your custom. Now they have it they want to stop it, they can't have it both ways. I will ring Tesco and ask their policy and if they are still taking them I will switch where I shop.

Asda seem to be getting a bit funny lately no where near as helpful as they use to be. They have also picked a really bad time to do this to their customers. What with the credit crunch and Xmas coming up. These shops will lose out in the end as more shoppers will more to Aldi, Lidl and Netto.
Thanks for any help and advice given

Why do people think they are entitled to use coupons for something they don't buy ?
    I just don't get it.
The supermarkets don't have to do it and tbh people taking advantage of it (reusing, using too many etc) have basically spoiled it for everyone. Instead of being happy getting a little off some people seem to want more more more. Result- noone gets anything!
I also feel sorry for the till staff- why should they be abused just because some chancer gets their commupance at last!
Reduce grocery spending by using coupons correctly, buying only what you need, reducing waste etc.

I did not think I was entitled to use them until these shops said we could. I use about 1 to 2 pounds worth of a weekly shop of £50. If they say they can't take them I have NEVER been rude to the cashier, as I am sure goes the same for many others.

Shops like Asda and Tesco caused all this themselves by promoting the use of other shops voucher's when they were trying to entice their competitors customer's away. If I had more coupons than £2 I would use them another time.
Thanks for any help and advice given

as always i see 2 sides, why not be grateful whilst it lasted think of the little bit of money you've saved and be thankful, there is a reason you shop at ASDA other than coupons surely?? you have to look at the big picture, which is the cheapest supermarket? why do I enjoy shopping there? am i really prepared to change a complete shopping habit for £2 worth of coupons a week? can i not just use the coupons for the product they are intended for? aldi, lidl, netto have been around for a while now but ASDA is still going strong and there has to be a reason for that hey? its the big picture!! and yes the recession is hitting but it hits across all supermarkets, shopping is a pain in the bum at the best of times i reckon don't stress yourself out any more than needed and just go with the flow, no doubt ASDA or TESCO will bring another teaser in, in the not too distant future! ;)

Oh of course, it was not a personal dig at you nickyt- many like you are also courteous and respectful :D. I just think there are a few who don't treat the shop staff with respect and that, imho, is not on.

I used to work at Sainsbury's when I was at college. I left nearly 4 years ago, but was always told only to accept vouchers when the customer actually bought the item.

I can understand people being annoyed at supermarkets no longer accepting a £x off a spend of £x with another stores name on it, as I know some did have banners and the like saying that they would accept other supermarkets vouchers. However I really don't see the problem with not being able to use vouchers when you haven't bought a specific item, the vouchers all clearly state what you have to buy to obtain the discount. I would never have even tried using a coupon for something I hadn't bought. The whole point of the discount is that you try the item. If you have been allowed to get away with using these in the past I'd just be happy with whatever I'd been able to save previously.
