That's nonsense. Have you not read how Tesco dictate prices they pay due to their size and how they have put companies out of buisness by dropping them when they don't toe the line.
out of interest, can you provide references for this?

But back to 'the man on the street'...

We dont care how many employees the supermarkets have to employ.
We cant do anything about the land they are locking (think theres been a few backhanders with local councils imho).
Non shareholders don't give a fig how much dividend the shareholders receive.

They care about the prices they pay and the ways in which they can stretch their wage to feed their families in this current financial climate.

    Hands up who believes this:
Tesco Fires New Price War Salvo
    Sky News, 6th Jan 2009

Tesco is launching a £100m price cutting campaign as the supermarket pricing war hots up.

The store giant also said it was launching an advertising campaign comparing the cost of customers' baskets of shopping against the prices of its competitors.

The move comes after Asda announced a wave of discounts on thousands of items.

And now Tesco says the prices of a range of staple goods will be cut this month.
Offers will include three for £3 on Hovis bread and reductions in the prices of Muller Light yoghurts, Weetabix and own brand tea bags and orange juice.
    we've heard it all before...

I buy the Tesco label Hot chocolate in the red tin. It's the only one the kids like. It was roughly 78p when I started buying it just over a year ago and has been steadily increasing in price ever since, today it's up to £2.26:eek: I must have re-read the label several times as I couldn't believe it. I wouldn't bother buying it but the kids will only have a hot milky chocolate drink before school.

One thing to look out for in Tescos is the "bulk" packs of stuff costing more than smaller packs.

I've seen this a lot in Tescos,

The ones I've seen recently are cheese slices (2 ten packs were about 10p cheaper than the 20 pack)

It also works the other way i once picked up my usual medium sized wash powder (fits nicely in the cupboard) and happened to glance at the shelf the one i was getting was 10p more than the box 2x its size, i don't need to tell you which one i bought!!!

My survival technique = Shop Around
I learned this as a child when my Mum would go to one shop for the sugar, to another for the bread, another for the tomatos etc. because each store sold this product a few pence cheaper than the rest.
When I married, was working and a family to raise, I became the typical Weekly shopper - doing one big shop a week, with a couple of small fresh purchases in between.
I do not have any more time now - but tend to shop daily, if not 2 or 3 diff shops a day.
It can be much more time consuming, but it means I can bag each stores offers.
eg, today at Asda I got:- olive oil - 2 litre bottles for £4, Loyd Grossman sauces £1etc.
Later called in at Tesco to get the late night reductions, and use MOC
When I have the time I would visit each major retailer at least once a fortnight to stock up on whatever their current bargain/offers are
Cat food, toilet rolls, toothpaste, soup, beans etc etc.
I use plastic, and have the freezer and cupboard space so I can fill up on these items, and save money.
    But it is time consuming.
The elderly or people who do not have their own car or do not have the space, would struggle to take advantage of different store offers.

If I had to pay full price, ASDA would be the cheapest by far.
But, my local Tesco is nearer, has excellent end-of-day reductions, and it takes my MOC - My cake tins are heaving tonight as I cleared out the bakery of muffins and choc slabs, probably cost me £1 in total ;)
The Asda does do reductions, but is farther away, and doesn't take many moc
  • it is amazing how many people don't look at the prices when they buy stuff or even look at what else is available on the same shelf. I think lots of people - obviously not MSErs - are just programmed to buy what they normally do, which is how the big guns make their money.

I nearly stopped a woman the other day - she bought heniz ketchup for £2.30ish when one shelf lower the bigger (amost double size as it had 30% free) was only 30p more! Course i wouldn't spend that much on ketchup anyway and bought asdas own for 75p!

Have a look at mug buyer poster number 2 here it's all ok Tesco are whiter than white everything is all down to exchange rates. There's one born every minute

    I'll quote the post

It may be a result of the weakening of sterling against other currencies.

For instance - imagine you have a bar of chocolate shipped from Europe that costs you 99p. That may cost the store €1.00 from the producer, which worked out at approximately £0.67 when it was trading at £1:€1.5. It is still costing €1.00 from the producer, but now pound sterling is trading at £1:€1.1, so the cost of that chocolate bar in sterling is now £0.91. Rising costs means rising prices.

Now does that strike you as from a sucker who rolls over and accepts it ?:D
