It could be a mistake - but I wonder how much it's an attempt to gauge how many people carry on buying regardless.
I saw these in Tesco Ely then went round into the wholefood section and got a 300g bag for under a pound!!! think it was 87p, it just doesn't make sense!!http://images.moneysavingexpert.com/images/forum_images/smilies/confused-smiley-013.gifSlightly bitter0 -
Done my usual weekly Tesco shop and i was amazed at the number of items i buy regularly that have crept up another few pence, this after recent increases on the exact same things. Just when will it end.
They keep on about how they are helping people in these hard times but the offers on the rubbish foods are helping nobody.
The policy seems to be do junk food offers, (crisps this week for example) whilst keep pushing up what we buy everyday. Then say they have cut thousands of prices. Sure they have, on stuff hardly anyone buys much off.
When will they ever follow Asda with the type of press release they have just put out. http://www.asda-press.co.uk/pressrelease/272
They wont.0 -
I have noticed on their own brand pet food, they don't sell single cans of cat food in jelly anymore, you can only buy themulti packs which have gone up in recent weeks from £1.89 to £2.35 for 6 cans.
Also, I wanted peanut butter yesterday and they onlyhad sunpat and orgaonic brands on the shelf - there were no tesco brands there to choose from at all - I used to get their value peanut butter.
I also havn't been able to find their value tinnd mandarins, tinned fruit cocktail or decaf cola. I'm guessing they've disconned without warning - grrrrr.0 -

And we are still being told that Tesco are helping us to spend less:rolleyes:
Well, we'll certainly spend less in their stores if it carries on.
Supermarkets are their own worst enemy. If they want to discourage people they're doing a fair job!Looking forward to the future.0 -
I've got a distinct feeling what's going on is this: They're phasing out their value range and gradually replace the value products with their new "biggest discounter" lines. Which are priced higher, of course.
It does absolutely make sense from a business point of view. Although their value lines were in most cases noticeably cheaper than the corresponding Aldi or Lidl products, there can't possibly have been much of a margin on them. So by pulling even in price with the hard discounters on, as I will maliciously assume, merely repackaged and rebranded items formerly known as "Tesco Value", they increase their margin in the "low price" assortment quite considerably. Which is the smart course of action in times of the real or perceived "pinch" making many customers downgrade to cheaper lines. "You wanna shift? Alright then. You shift the products, we shift the margins."
All this is being accompanied by a huge marketing song and dance, with two functions: to distract customers from what are actually price increases, and to propagate their claim of determination and capability to take on the discounters. For they have only just begun to see those as serious competitors. Why don't they simply undercut them? No way. Way too easy. We can do better than that!
Not a bad strategy at all, is it? Increasing margins (= prices) on the one hand while blowing the horn of "cheap as Aldi" on the other. Master strike. Looks like someone's really done their marketing homework.
But alas, it's more see-through than they think.0 -
As ever, I buy just the value basics from the supermarkets, and top up with only what is reduced unless I genuinely need it, and even then I seek out BOGOFs so can be flexible on brands. I have seen a lot of price increases, even on the value ranges.0

The one thing I would like to see in a discount range is Non-bio washing powder - but they only have bio varieties, forcing me to pay more for the standard brand or more expensive brands. I have no idea if the discount stuff itself would be any good but it would be nice to have the option.
PArdon my ignorance but what is the difference between bio and non bio?0 -

And isn't that precisely what 50% of all economics is about? Achieving a set economic target with the lowest possible input?
In this case, purchasing the everyday items that meet your subjective needs at your subjective preference for as little money as possible.
I see it as a challenge.0 -
I agree with all your posts in this thread. The only things I cannot compromise on are: Heinz ketchup, and either Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi as nothing tastes as good. Otherwise, whatever brand is reduced or on offer does me fine!!
Money is tight and I'd rather spend it on other things than making my cupboard look pretty with Heinz logos instead of no frills ones. That's just vain and silly.0 -
strawberries at local were £2.99, which INCLUDED '£1 off' ??
they are currently doing 3for2 on selected veg, though most are about £1.50 each (before discount) -
i am sure local market would be better value, and a darn site (sp?) fresher..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0
