Complicated pregnancy - what are the fathers rights and what should I do?

  • I was in a similar situation 7 years ago, the main difference being that I knew from the outset the baby was not my husbands. I think it's easy to see everything as a big mess and want to sort it out quickly. I was the one who was pregnant, I'd been the one to get myself into that situation and despite other peoples best intentions, I was going to decide what to do about it. Things have a way of working themselves out, life is unpredictable and becoming pregnant, creating a new life should be a joyous occasion, it is after all nothing short of a miracle. I decided to continue with my pregnancy, it was an easy choice in a way as I knew I would always regret having a termination particularly if I never became pregnant again. I was worried about losing my job and so looked into the benefits system for the first time but fortunately managed to get a permanent contract at work before my bump began to show. My husband decided to stick with me but wasn't that involved with the pregnancy and wasn't sure how he was going to feel after the baby was born. The babys father legged it when he found out I wasn't going to 'get rid of it' (as he delicately put it). seven years on, I've grown up alot and have a beautiful son who calls my husbab 'dad'. My marriage has survived, not easily and we've both changed but life is tough and you have to deal with it, so good luck and remember how lucky you are to be pregnant, give your husband plenty of time and space to work out how he feels and concentrate on looking after yourself.
