My postie always knocks first, but if I am not in, then he will sign for recorded items for me, usually small packages like cd's etc as am an ebay addict, helps me as our sorting office is only open 8:30-12 so items cant be collected til the next morning as the postie doesnt finish his round til the afternoon.

He even payed a short stamped item for me to save me the hassle of getting to the sorting office. (again a big no-no as they cant accept cash on the doorstep anymore) But he didnt want the money anyhows.

One problem though could be official stuff such as court papers, eviction notices, etc etc, if the sender sees they are signed for, they assume you have received it even if you havent.

Interesting you mention court papers as on the doormat one day I found a signed for (by postie) court envelope for one of my neighbours. Well ex neighbour since he did a runner and owes lots of people lots of money. Even had people on the doorstep asking about him and his "company" - another story

I will say here that I am not complaining about post office staff as a general rule.
We used to have an excellent guy. You could almost set your watch by the time he arrived each morning 0730 - never later than 0740.

Now if I get the mail before 1200 I know it is a relief postie.
Saturday delivery is usually around 2pm - latest was 3:50pm.

Not sure where to put this but here goes,we seem to have a postie who can arrive any time between 11am and it has been as late as 5.00pm anyway i ordered some goods which required a signiture so guess what my postie signed for them and posted through my letter box.I thought it was a bit strange but thought no more about it until today when i realised he has noe done this 3 times where goods need to be signed for and he signs himself and posts the goods is he just being helpfull do i raise the matter and where do i stand if i try and say they have never turned up

He is doing you a favour, my postman knocks on my door and if I am not in he will go round the back through my back gate and put all my parcels in my shed and also sign for them which I am very grateful for. He is great. I would never land him in trouble if things went missing because I agreed to it. Its my fault if the stuff goes missing from my shed or is signed for by him cause I don't mind. also the collection depot is five mins walk down the road from my house. He arrives at 8.30 mon to frid and even earlier saturday.

Where do you stand if you try and claim because the goods didnt turn up - even tough they did!! Hopefully you will get found out and if your employers find out your integrity you too will lose your job, not just the person who tried to help you!!

This is a money saving forum

i did want to point out that this is 'shop, don't drop' and it's in the wrong forum but i didn't want to seem petty, but sod it, i was picked on this week for putting up a thread which was at least kinda in the right place

btw, my postie at least has the sense to stick smallish packages that don't fit the letter box through the cat flap :T

oh, and i do have to agree, it is normally couriers that leave things outside, i had a card through my door saying my parcel was outside my backdoor when i live in an upstairs maisonette that doesn't have a back door!!

I've been Money Tipped! Chutzpah Haggler
If I get any parcels my postie doesn't even knock, he just shoves a card through the letterbox, I know this cos I was in last week and heard the letterbox go and found the card, he hadn't knocked or rung the doorbell and this has happened a few times, it makes me mad as I have a 10 mile trip to the sorting office to collect them, I don't see why they can't be taken to the local post office which he would have to drive by on the way to the sorting office, oh but they will do that won't they? if I pay them 50p for the pleasure!!!!

i work full time - the item they lost was going to be re-delived to my work.

i went down today to the main sorting office in york to pick my item up today, maybe you're in the fortunate position not to work but i do
'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time
  • my postie is great, he turns up between 10:30am and 11am, regular as clockwork, he always knocks if the parcel is to big or needs a signature, he wont leave it with anyone from an address other than the one on the package/envelope and doesnt hide things in the shed etc to help me out, he simply does his job, very efficiently and with minimum fuss, and that for me is all i can ever ask of him :)

on a side note, the vast majority say that the postie is signing to do you a favour, maybe he is, but if hes carried a package about for 2 hours is he really doing you a favour or is it just a way of dumping the parcel so he doesnt have to carry it round for the rest of his shift and then again when it is re delivered.
