If I get any parcels my postie doesn't even knock, he just shoves a card through the letterbox, I know this cos I was in last week and heard the letterbox go and found the card, he hadn't knocked or rung the doorbell and this has happened a few times, it makes me mad as I have a 10 mile trip to the sorting office to collect them, I don't see why they can't be taken to the local post office which he would have to drive by on the way to the sorting office, oh but they will do that won't they? if I pay them 50p for the pleasure!!!!

because very few post offices have the capacity to hold a mass of parcels
have you seen whats happening to the PO network?
our office is open later than any post office in our delivery area so how would my customers like having shorter opening hours to collect?
you see what suits you doesnt suit everybody
  • My son just asks for the item to be delivered to his local PO (two minute's walk). I think it costds 50p.

A good price for not having to go to the depot imho.

Can I just say in this thread...

    I LOVE MY POSTIE!!!!

I'm a full time Mum/Wife/student and I'm rarely in to receive my post, he knows this and will often sign for things for me and pop them in a safe place.

Yesterday morning I had to go out, but was expecting a pretty important Uni book. I saw my postie coming up the street and pulled up, where he told me it was on the van and not with him... Next minute he had called the van driver, told him to sign and put the book in my hiding place and when I got back there it was.

If it hadnt been for this, I wouldnt have got the book until Wednesday (first chance to get to the sorting office), and I would have lost out on the use of the book for a few days.

So yes, I love him to bits!

The Royal Mail are hopefully going to drop the 50p charge very soon, details will follow in a Christmas Card that will be sent to every UK home in November. It will be free to have your packets sent to a local post office (if there are any left in your area) for you to collect from there. Plus there will be news of evening and Sunday deliveries with longer enquiry office opening hours.

Thank you to everyone who has posted a supportive message for the postie - it is the contact with the customer that makes the job so worthwhile.

It seems there are lots of people here that are more than happy for their postie to break the rules and sign for deliveries that (s)he shouldn't. But hey, if it saves you having to re-arrange delivery (very easy to do), or drive to the sorting office (which might not be), then why not???

If the OP isn't happy for the postie to sign for items, then (s)he should say so. It should be by prior arrangement only. Whether that be with the actual postie, or higher up.

However, the bottom line is the postie should not be doing it. Irrespective of whether you think he's doing you a favour or not. If RM have an item recorded as delivered and signed for (by the postie), it opens up a whole can of worms if it wasn't.

  • on saturday morning my post arrived at about 7:30am. i know because the thud woke me up briefly. after finally waking up at about 10am, i noticed a note on one of my envelopes saying there was a box behind my recycling bin. i can't thank my postie enough for that! i would have had a horrible saturday if i had been woken up at 7:30!!!

i think posties who do this are doing us a favour!
