Some people on here are unbelievable. You,rightly or wrongly have a postie signing and delivering for you and receive the item yet you want to complain and say (fraudulently) you havent recieved the item.
Most people support their posties as shown here. If you arent happy, tell the postie, not be like some sourpusses here and complain and get them in trouble, most are trying to help and will comply with your wishes if you speak to them.
As for the idiot saying the postie is being fraudulent by doing it, how, he is delivering the item, not knicking it.
As for the person complaining about getting mail for someone not living at the address, how does the postie know that? Delivering as addressed is a crime as well now is it? Send it back or destroy it, dont make something out of nothing.
The poor posties cant do right for wrong, you try and help people and they still complain. Pathetic. Just sums up this country and the way its going doesnt it!

My postman did this just last week, and I was a bit surprised as I was at home at the time and he just didn't bother to come to the door to have me sign. And I live on the bottom floor in a flat, not very far from where the mailboxes are, so it wouldn't mean a lot of extra effort for him to come to the door. I found it a little disturbing, but quickly forgot about it until now.

My only concern would be that if he signed for something that didn't fit in the mailbox and left it outside the box, what if someone else took it? I've never had that happen, but it could as quite often anything too big to fit in the letter slot of our locked box is set underneath the bank of mailboxes in the hallway. It could make for a real headache and lots of calls to the company and the post office trying to explain how I didn't receive something that had been signed for. So it's a bad habit when a postie does that, but I wouldn't complain about the postie unless something like that did happen where I didn't get a package for some reason because he had signed for it himself. And perhaps he wouldn't sign for it if he had to leave it outside the mailbox.

I'm surprised that posties do this. It has never happened here and I'd be quite annoyed if it did. I ask for parcels to be delivered to work usually, so that they can be signed for at all times during the week. When stuff comes to my home address I would expect to sign for it or to collect it.

It's not unknown that we've received mail for other addresses and vice versa, so there is always the possibility of something being delivered to the wrong address. And presumably something that needs signing for is either valuable or personal - I'd want neither going elsewhere.

I can understand posties trying to be helpful but they are making themselves rather vulnerable doing this. And there is the possibility of losing stuff.

I once had a Royal Mail delivery from Amazon (no signing required) left on the doorstep in full view of passers by. It was an ipod video and worth over £150! I made a complaint to the Royal Mail and the postie was (I assume) reprimanded.

  • My postie does this saves me going to the post office to collect
  • "where do I stand if I try and say they have never turned up"
Why do you want to commit fraud? Not only do you risk public humiliation, But you also risk a jail sentence. The postman could lose his job because of your petty avarice. Unbelievable!

A relief postman once signed for a big parcel and then left it on the doorstep. (I wasn't happy with this as it could have been stolen but luckily it wasn't).
I wouldn't mind if my postman signed for something if it would fit through the letter box though as it would save me going to the post office.

What happens if he signs for it and doesn't post it through your letter box ?

Delivery fraud is a major issue for retailers, and if somebody rings up to see where their order is, if there's a P.O.D, then the recipient has to go thru a long process of proving it hasn't been delivered. The Postie is being kind here, but he is putting the recipient in danger, especially if he "leaves safe" or only half posts it thru the door. Doing the "right thing" is no defence when his boss gives him the sack for losing post - as unlikely as that would be.
  • Rules are there for a reason. Like them, loathe them, the post man/woman shouldn't be signing for goods. kiddy guy made some good points. At the end of the day, if the postie was allowed to sign and that was okay, it'd be in the rules and regs.

Personally, IMHO, yes, it makes lives easier - but so does parking on yellow lines just for 1min; borrowing those bic pens from work - they don't cost the company anything, anyway; saying you posted the cheque when really it is in the bottom of you bag under loads of fluff and sweet papers...

We all make excuses because it makes OUR lives easier. But down the line the rule is there to protect someone else.

    Nope.

I am someone who is not happy with my postman taking liberties and breaking the rules just to make life easier.

Over the past 3 years much mail has gone missing, turned up at the wrong address.
The wrong mail has been delivered. Items have been stolen from envelopes.

All of the above are or have been under investigation.

Perhaps my experiences have coloured my views somewhat, but if I don't sign for something I sure as hell don't want my postman doing so.
