I cancelled Sky a year ago and, yes, I've had offers, but, frankly they've been derisory. At the time I cancelled, people were getting much better offers, on a seemingly random basis, just for phoning up and moaning! I chanced my arm on cancellation and was unlucky, didn't get offered a flipping thing! The best I've been offered, after a whole year, is free Sky+ and £50 in M&S vouchers. But, over the year, I've not really missed it even though I was traumatised for a day or so when I cancelled.

Given that there is very little I'd pay for on the extra TV channels (I can buy a boxed set for the few programmes I want and come out better off) and that by the time I pay for the BT line, my current (totally trouble free ever) broadband and telephone package is much better. So, the only reason I'd go back is for very good value installation and no montly fee HD. And I'm thinking with credit crunch and all, give it a few months and that may be an option.
  • THANKS so much to the OP, I've been wanting Sky HD for ages- actually really wanted it for the Olympics, but called up and was told it would be £220  After reading this I called back, mentioned the magic word "Virgin" and was offered Sky for £69 plus free installation, and I was like, hmm yeah but then I still have to pay the extra £10.... quick as a flash he offered me the £10 reduced to £5 for 6 months :rotfl: Only problem is the next install date is the 29th October, which is ageeeeeeees away! Oh yeah and they said the would move the SKY + box upstairs- bonus! So all in all very pleased. :T
  • Yep worked for me.
Sky hd for £50, free instalation and half price multi room and hd ( £5 each) for 6 mths. I'm a existing customer and rang them to say I want to cancel and go freesat.
    Thanks op.
What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots
  • I didn't want the hd- Im not too fussed about it but decided to see how much I can save on current services. At the moment I pay 12 pounds for line rental to bt. Then 18 pounds to sky for 2 channel mixes and free base broadband.

Just rang up after meaning to for the past few months, said about credit crunch, times being hard.

he offered me free phone line rental for a year. So I am better off by more than 120 pounds this year!!!!tried bargaining for sky + etc but he would not have it and was offereing me it at rubbish prices, despite mentioning virgin. So gave up on anything more

    But still very happy!!
  • I'm due to have Sky HD installed on Wednesday and read here that I can keep the old Sky+ box.

I read a post from someone who has had it installed in a bedroom. I'd like to do something similar but would I have to pay for multi room for it to work?

I was going to ask the Sky guy to install a magic eye for me but if he could do this and me not have to pay for it, so much the better!

We have two broken Sky+ boxes (one won't switch on, one won't record). Spoke to Sky's Technical people who said that I'd need a call-out (£65).

I called Sales to explain this and to ask if they could do me a deal as I was looking to get SkyHD. They said all they could do was the current offer (£75 for box plus £30 for installation) to replace one of the Sky+ boxes. And I'd still have to pay £65 for the faulty box call-out. The young lady was saying that £75 was half the price of their normal HD and that the boxes were worth £300 etc, etc. I said thanks but no thanks - it was too much....

    Wasn't planning to cancel, but...

Called the Cancellations Dept in Livingstone and explained everything above. Had a chat with the guy and explained that I'd had no problems with Sky, enjoyed it, liked the Sky+ features etc, but couldn't afford a £65 call out to fix existing boxes and/or £105 if I wanted to upgrade to HD.

They put me on hold for a while and came back with the offer of £49 to supply the HD box and £10 install the HD box, plus half price HD for six months (i.e. £5 instead of £10) PLUS they'd fix one of the Sky+ boxes for the multiroom.

I ummed and ahhed for a while then said OK!!

Think as long as you're willing to chat to the people and say that you're not cancelling because Rupert Murdoch's a %$@*er, then they'll do what they can to keep you.

Just acquired the HD package at £49 + £5 pm for 6 months using the "cancellation" threat. They also knocked off £5 pm from the Multi Room sub.

Lets be honest - when you have a full Sky subscription you aint going to settle for Freesat, at least not if you can still afford it.

Another wad of money saved simply by reading this wonderful site before you make a purchase!

Was brave enough to threaten to cancel (08442 4141441 option 5,3,5) due to the price of the HD box and installation as quoted in a letter we had from Sky.

(letter offered HD box for £75 plus £30 installation or free installation if you took multiroom)

I told them I felt unfairly treated as I already had multiroom so I was better off cancelling multiroom first.

The nice Scottish chap asked if I was happy with the Sky services we receive and I said yes, I don't particulary want to cancel but I can get it cheaper on freesat bla bla bla

Anyway ended up with £49 for the Sky+HD, move our excisting Sky+ box upstairs (multiroom), installation of £10 and half price HD mix for for 6 months (£5) and half price multirrom for 6 months (£5)

I did have to 'barter' a bit to get the prices the down a bit but I think if you remain friendly and polite, they are happy to help.

I tried to cancel the contract using the virgin, freestat, credit crunch buzz words and was offered absolutely nothing.

Fearing i wasnt negotiating strongly enough i instructed them to cancel the account! I have (or should that be had) telephone, broadband and tv with them and on the 13 of next month i will have none of these services!!!

Deep gulp - should I go back crawling? Can i even go back crawling?

Should I open a new account in my partners name?

Should i just try freestat - they only tv channel i would miss would be Sky 1.

I can't be the only person this bluff hasnt worked for ..... what did you do?

    Advice much appreciated?

  • I think the problem with Sky is that they are getting wise to people saying that they are cancelling just to get a better deal, as someone else has mentioned on here, it is unlikely that if you have the full package or nearly the full package, you are not going to cancel and go to freesat as you wouldnt get anywhere near the channels (assuming you are not cancelling because of cost). I also think that Sky representatives have a target of cancellations to save and once they have done that for the day they dont really care if you cancel or not. When I got my HD (which is being fitted on Saturday), I got it for £49 + £10 Install, I was very open and honest with them and said that I wanted a good deal as I had been a loyal customer for over ten years and our bills are nearly a £100 a month !! the adviser I was speaking just said to me, 'so if you couldnt get a good deal on a new HD box, would you cancel sky ??' she sort of led me to what I needed to say which was very nice of her !

I would never cancel unless things got tougher on the money front my DH would go stir crazy and TBH sky probably know that about most customers. Just as a tip, I phoned quite late on a Sunday to get my deal, maybe that could be of help to someone ???.
