  • Just documented the Couch to 5k training plan.

I used to run a lot a few years ago but wanting to get back to it again.

A mate is running the Belfast Marathon on Monday 4th May 09 and I am very jealous so my goal is to run it next year!!!

Skyelight - I'll join you... not up to running yet, but I'm 19and a bit stone, can't concieve cos of my weight and have a gym induction tomorrow. Don't want to take to the streets yet cos I'm a teacher so lots of kids around me know me - but going to really go for this on the treadmill and make the change and make it stick this time.

good luck - I've just got to the end of week 3 and I never thought it would be possible but it really is. Each week it gets a bit better (well it makes the previous week look easy in comparison :rotfl:). I dont like to run in front of people but I can use the 5 minute warm up to get away from the house. The first time I started week one I thought I was going to collapse on the floor in a heap and stay there. I'm still knackered at the end of the session but at now I'm reasonably recovered when I get home.

Also ipods are amazing things - if you turn it up loud enough nobody can see you. I think thats scientifically provable ;)

It does get a lot easier - the first week my knees hurt all of the time, last week my calves the day after, this week I am on run 3 of week 3 (and actually smiled myway throught the 3 minute runs!) and it no longer hurts the next day. My DH has also started, he has just done week 1 run 3, the first two he had very sore calves but he was fine after his third run, and looked a lot less hot and bothered on his return. I am looking forward to week 4 run 1 on Monday - and this is from a confirmed exercise hater.

I am in the exact same place now and I would have written the exact same words - how scary is that

Well I've been to the gym twice today (once for the induction and a quick go then we went back this evening after we'd recovered a bit). Walked 5 mins on the treadmill first time at 6 on the speedy thing, and then walked 10 minutes on the treadmill at 5.5 WITH AN UPHILLY BIT ADDED ON! this evening in addition to some time on the exercise bikes and things (my rear is the wrong shape for bike saddles). No way I could do anything other than a brisk walk - I've got a dreadful sense of balance anyway and have visions of flying off the back of the treadmill in a bad version of the Berrocca advert - but I've got the ambition that one day I'll be able to go out for a jog and things and I'm working for that - once I can walk comfortably I'm going to start with the podcasts and things but I'm nowhere near even looking at week 1 yet.

well done on getting started dizziblonde :T

Dont be too worried about the running though - I was really scared but the nack seems to be to go reeeeeeeeeeeeallllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyy slow - more of a shuffle than a run. As you say once you are used to walking a bit more then you will be more than ready for the shuffling. I have several stone I need to lose too and am already seeing some good effects - walking up stairs doesnt leave me as out of breath anymore for example and its only been 3 weeks!

Went back today (was aching but at the moment I need to get the habit of going to the gym established rather than going home, slumping in front of the computer and doing nowt till bedtime), and did 11 minutes on the treadmill - and shuffled for 30 seconds of that - twice(talking the dizzy heights of 6km/h there)! Some day week 1 will be in my grasp - although I think me shuffle/running sparked a small earthquake in the Midlands to be honest! No way I can touch week 1 yet - but the determination's still going - not sure if I'll go down the gym tomorrow - working at a school on the way there so the guilt mechanism will trip in if I don't go - but pretty achy thighs tonight.

well done - I'm sure I only go at about that speed too. I really dont think you are that far away from week 1. All you have to be able to do is shuffle for a minute :D. Next week let yourself try it - if you cant do it you can always stop and go back to something easier. Seriously I couldnt and wouldnt run to the end of the street 4 weeks ago and now I can just about shuffle for five minutes.

The running programme says that you should run 3 times a week with a day between sessions to rest and repair - so if your legs hurt maybe you shouldnt go tomorrow and let your aching muscles rest. Every step I took for a few weeks after starting hurt but now it does seem to be getting better - I was advised to get some new trainers by some slightly more fit friends though and they were right. If you are running in your old trainers like I was definitely consider getting new ones to give you some support. I also got some proper sports socks from Matalan which are doubled lined and I havent had a blister yet (which normally bothers me but might not you).

Well done you on going again :T I'm really proud of you even though I dont know you and I'll be more proud when you tell me you shuffled a whole minute and although you feel like collapsing on the floor and not getting back up again deep down you feel quite good .
