Really feeling better now. 3.5 miles yesterday, a fair pace, actually looks and feels like running now, instead of speedy shuffling. My heart is no longer endeavouring to claw it's way out of my chest, and even my lower limbs don't consider amputation tobe the preferable option.

The advice on here was sound ~ too fast and too short runs. The first mile is horrid, but after that it becomes ..... okay. I no longer hate every second, but I've a way to go before I consider it enjoyable.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

I took myself out today for the first outside run. And I didn't manage it.... :embarasse

I managed the warm-up and only 3 short 60sec runs (jogs). I did, sensibly, walk out the 5 min cool-down rather than just stop.

Ah well. I will persevere and will not give up. Out again on Saturday and see how far I can get. And perhaps look for some more trainers as the ones I bought are far from comfortable (were AOK in the shop!)

Stick with it - it will get easier, I promise!
I started at the end of Oct 08. My running buddy and I used the Race for Life Reebok training (which has now been removed from the site?). It is a similar programme to the Couch to 5K. Between Nov - Jan I did not change my eating habits at all and did not lose any weight. As I began to enjoy the running and feel a bit better, I realised that tiny changes would help me lose weight. So, I cut out my nightly binges, 3 nights of the week. I started eating breakfast every day. Since 9.2.09 I have lost 17lbs! Mind you, I have at least another 3 1/2 stone to go before I am at my ideal weight but I am happy to just keep going.
I now run 4 times a week and have progressed to running 45 mins in a session. I was the girl who could not run to the end of the road and the very thought of it made me feel as sick as a dog. Through out the weeks there have been periods where I think I have improved and then the next week I've not been able to run over 5 mins without a 1 min walking break. I've have just stuck at it and known that it will improve again - and it has. Since we started, 6 new people have joined the group and I have made new friends. I love it now. :D

Stick with it! 3 runs is probably still more than you thought you could manage. And if you keep trying, eventually you'll get there.

Are you sure you're not trying to run too fast? You want to be s-l-o-w! If you start too fast, you'll be fine at first but burn out too quickly. You want all of the sections to be at the same speed, with the same pace throughout each section.

LOL!! No - certainly not too fast. I think that I am doing too much exercise. Within 2 weeks, I have gone from nothing to doing an hour worth of DVD a day plus jogging in the front room - moving on to outside. Weighing as much as I do (20st. Good grief - cannot believe I mentioned that on a public forum!) hauling that around too often is too much and I think I have over done it.

So having a total day off today and will go for a jog tomorrow.

But - thanks for your support and encouragement!

It does get a lot easier - the first week my knees hurt all of the time, last week my calves the day after, this week I am on run 3 of week 3 (and actually smiled myway throught the 3 minute runs!) and it no longer hurts the next day. My DH has also started, he has just done week 1 run 3, the first two he had very sore calves but he was fine after his third run, and looked a lot less hot and bothered on his return. I am looking forward to week 4 run 1 on Monday - and this is from a confirmed exercise hater.

done a bit more today and it does seem to be a little easier - I can wait until I get home now before almost collapsing. I should have had a break today though and probably overdid it a bit - so I'll see how I feel tomorrow before I decide whether to go on the "proper" running day or not.
