  • Did the last of my week three runs today, running outdoors again, and also managed to persuade DSIL to run the 5k with me so we can be mutual nags about getting out and doing it. Though she's 15 years younger than me so does have a bit of an advantage.

Really enjoyed it today actually, I'm starting to get the bug I think!

belfastgirl23, I have been following your progress on here every so often and it is inspirational, the way you talk reminds me of the way I was when I first started running (I love that you are getting the bug!) and I miss it since my ankle injury. I am literally itching to get back into it!!! Maybe a little run this week is in order... :)

I'm beginning to think I should give up. Decided to start again (yeah I know :o) tonight and I pulled a muscle in my back on Friday morning. I think my body is trying to tell me something - either get up off your lazy **** and do something or I'm gonna keep hurting you till you do OR you're not making me do that :D. Can't decide which :D

Aw that must be so disappointing.

Have you thought about seeing a physio or sports therapist just to make sure you aren't a little bit out of alignment or something? DH swears by them and he's run marathons...

Or check your shoes! Running in badly fitting shoes is bad for you. They don't necessarily have to be expensive, just right for your feet. Have a look at your current ones and see how they're wearing away - if one area in particular is going but the rest seems fine then your feet are probably leaning onto that area most.

Also, how are you running? Remember to get your heels down - no running on your toes! I occasionally do if I'm going up a steep hill as it's easier, but it's also bad for you. Don't rotate your arms too much as they want to be more forward than sideways. If you're sweeping widely and passing your navel then this is probably wrong. And try to keep your shoulders loose and your neck long but not overstretched.

  • Hey,

Sorry to intrude on this thread as I haven't posted here before :o but I'm aiming to be able to run 5km by the end of March and am a bit scared!! I have a good training plan, proper running shoes and use of a free treadmill.... The thing is I tried to start last year and quit after a couple of weeks :( I think because the plan I picked was too difficult (tho the first day was only 20 mins 1min walk: 1 min run :o!!!) as I am a complete beginner... So I have a new plan and completed the first day today, no problem:j so am feeling a bit more confident. Is running on a treadmill just generally easier? I set the incline to 10% cos I think I read somewhere that it mimics running outside a bit better...? Anyway, sorry for the rambling post but I'm feeling quite motivated for the first time ever and felt I had to share it with someone (even strangers on the internet:o). Good luck to everyone else with your plans. I am determined to stick with it this time!:)

belfastgirl23 and juno thanks for the tips. I do tend to run on my toes running up hill.

I'm really embarassed to say this but I pulled the muscle in my back getting out of bed on Friday morning - I still don't know how I managed it (Stupid or what but I am ridiculously clumsy:o) It is easing off each day so I'm gonna go to the gym tonight and take it easy. Wish me luck.

Welcome catcat...and believe me I feel your pain, I first tried running last year and it nearly killed me, the difference is I'm determined this time :) gave up about 2 weeks in last time.

I think you are supposed to use a bit of an incline cos it's better for joints etc...and you can turn it down when you start a new week's programme :) then gradually turn it up again.

    Good luck!

I'm about due to do my week 4 run but so far am finding reasons not to :) will have to get to it tomorrow at latest before I lose my momentum.

    And good luck peppep!
