I have one of those. It's my husband's old fishing bag (used to put his catch in it). It's been washed though, and doesn't smell. It's quite big and very strong.

right lets answer your questions 1 at a time,
where have you been for the past 10/15 years, aldi/netto/lidl have always done this or have done since i started shopping at them, they charge for bags so tehy can keep the prices for the food they sell low,
they dont throw it on the belt, you put your shopping on the belt and the till operator has to scan the items fast so once hes scanned each item u put it in the trolley or you put it on the side ready to pack once you have payed, the till operator has to scan 800 items a minute and he can only achieve this if the customer puts the food straight into the trolley/or on the side, he cant achieve his target if the customer decides that they can pack the food fast or they're not organised which can allow a queue to build up and in turn the till operator will have to open up another till which that person would have to stop what theyre doing to open up,
maybe you should get a job at aldi or lidl to see what its like0 -

i see customers whilst in working putting bananas in a small plastic bag which then goes into another bag, the bananas have a thick skin on them so its not as though the bag will protect them

Not really when you consider that M&S use millions of them and benefit from economies of scale whereas Lidl & their likes does use as many per annum. But surely the price is the whole point - to deter you unless you really really want one.The man without a signature.0 -

Well I find even the cheap Aldi and Lidl bags to be far more durable than the bags M&S used to give out for free (I assume they are still the same bags even though you pay for them)."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0
