right lets answer your questions 1 at a time,
where have you been for the past 10/15 years, aldi/netto/lidl have always done this or have done since i started shopping at them, they charge for bags so tehy can keep the prices for the food they sell low,
they dont throw it on the belt, you put your shopping on the belt and the till operator has to scan the items fast so once hes scanned each item u put it in the trolley or you put it on the side ready to pack once you have payed, the till operator has to scan 800 items a minute and he can only achieve this if the customer puts the food straight into the trolley/or on the side, he cant achieve his target if the customer decides that they can pack the food fast or they're not organised which can allow a queue to build up and in turn the till operator will have to open up another till which that person would have to stop what theyre doing to open up,

maybe you should get a job at aldi or lidl to see what its like

Why do they have this "scanning target"? Isn't that a bit unethical?

It's to keep staff costs down. Slow staff would mean they'd need more cashiers.
  • all supermarkets used to charge for carrier bags in the 70's as far as I remember - so people used to take their own bags, and the landfills were not full of used once carrier bags.

Shame it ever changed if you ask me.

I also lived in holland and it is common practice there to charge for carriers too.
  • It will change - soon you will have to pay for carrier bags, once one of the big 4 start doing it, they all will - its just whichever one is brave enough first.

Smaller places like M&S and Co-op are already doing it. My local co-op charges £1 for a bag.
    Moving on up :o SPC #382 ~ £40 banked
    12k in 2016 #15. £541.91/£3000

OMG I hope they fit their workers with bionic arms. Does anybody ever buy 800 items at once? Maybe 80 things would fill a trolley...but 800?????? If you had 80 items then it'd take what...one second or less for it all to be scanned. That is v.quick.

maybe its per hour, i honestly cant remember,

£1!!!!! That's extortionate, if you bought a bag of spuds you'd be more than doubling your costs!! Is it a reusable bag?

I travel to Ireland quite a bit, and Tesco have been charging for plastic carrier bags there for at least the last couple of years.

Wonder why they don't do it in the UK? More competition?

No it's the government. They have been told to do something about it in England & Wales or the government will bring in legislation. Thats why over the last year they have stopped offering bags unless you ask or made restrictions etc.

the more customers 1 person can serve means that the other 2 or 3 staff can do the other jobs required eg get the delivery out, fill the freezers or take a break, plus the more items they scan means more sales for the store which means a bonus in the pay packet

Are you sure? We use asda all the time for home deliveries and you wouldnt believe the amount of carrier bags they give! Bananas get their own bag, 1 tin in its own bag, things like that. Its ridiculous lol. I know my mum shops at asda daily but she hasnt mentioned paying for their bags now, I know I wouldnt be willing to.. they break too easy lol.
