  • Kudos indeed to the supermarkets for slooooooooowly phasing out carrier bags - I always forget to take my bag for life (I've got a little pile of them behind the sofa!) - If i there was no alternative I'd HAVE to change my habits.

Changing habits little by little is the way forward!

Twice in the last 2 weeks I have been to B&Q with my Husband.
Twice I have asked for a carrier bag (we dont have a car so have to walk it and its quite far so obviously need a bag!) and seriously.. the looks on their faces..
The first time the woman looked at me with a kind of "are you serious?" expression, like have you really just asked for a bag? Anyway she said bags are 5p like that was a massive fortune, so I was like thats fine.
Today we went again and it was a different woman serving. I asked for a bag and she did the same thing! Looked at me like "are you serious? you want a bag?!" and went on to say its 10p! So I said thats fine, and said to my Husband "I nearly forgot to get a bag, that would have been difficult to carry this all home!" and then she said she would go and get me a wallpaper bag as it would carry it all and was only 5p.
Weirdly enough, the first time I got a bigger bag which I guess the second woman was wanting to charge 10p for.. do they make up prices on the spot or something? lol :rotfl: And ugh, we had such a time with todays bag lol the stuff was too heavy for it so it was stretching under the strain .
Is it so strange for someone to go to a DIY store and have no means of transport other than their own feet? :rotfl:

    Ill get me 'coat' then:o
lol :) I wasn't having a dig at you personally, just the whole poly bag culture in general

I get mad at myself when I find I'm in any store minus my re-usable shoppers so now I keep some by the front door & a couple of lightweight ones hanging on the door handle to remind me to take them along

in spite of my efforts, I still find I've masses of the beggars  (poly bags that is) I'm sure they're surreptitiously breeding because they know they're an endangered species!

PS ... those big Lidl's carrier bags, the 99p ones, are a really good investment, I've had a couple for around 4-5 years now & apart from the obvious shopping etc, the best use I've found for them was systematically transferring my collection of books when I moved house (that's how I know how long I've had them :D)

I think the point is that it isn't strange for someone to walk to a DIY store, it is unusual nowadays to expect a flurry of carrier bags to be provided. I agree that sometimes it is frustrating to pop into a shop on the spur of the moment and not take bags ready, but when going shopping and expecting to buy something then maybe get in the habit of taking a fold up bag in your coat pocket.

Whether it really is for green purposes or just another way of making money I would not care to speculate, however this is the way forward and we will have to get used to it.

I did once annoy the staff in M and S as I rushed in after work as the children had friends in and I was running very very late , grabbed a large pizza and a bag of potatoes and realised I had no bag. I refused to buy a bag and said I would carry the stuff openly as all I needed to get was one item of clothing from the back of the store and then I could walk home. They told me i wasn't allowed to carry the food through the store without a bag..and when I refused to buy one they gave me one.

  • The stores need to look at themselves first. Why is it necessary to have organic kiwis on a polystyrene tray wrapped in cellophane, when "normal" kiwis are fine loose? And why is their signage lit up when the store is closed? Surely that's bad for the environment AND a waste of money.

Packaging will be a supplier issue. I also imagine it's not going to be as practical to have slower selling products loose.

I've gone round places at late times and never seen Supermarket signage on when the store is closed. Are you sure the store(s) were closed?

I agree, Ive always been one for shoving all my shopping into a free bag, and Morrisons now only give you bags if you ask for them. I bought half a dozen bags for life which are infinitely better anyway and easier to carry and got into the habit of pulling them out of the car when I go in.

    Much easier.

They can work with the suppliers on their own branded products, surely. IMO it has nothing to do with shelf-life, it has to do with wanting to convince people buying Organic that the extra cost is worth it. If the organic stuff looked the same as the normal stuff, they'd be less inclined to buy it. The people I know who are genuinely very keen on how their food is sourced, shop at local markets and wholefood shops anyway.

As for the lighting, our local Sainsburys (West Sussex) does this. The lights instore are switched off but not the signage.
  • Went to my local Lidl yesterday, They don't give you chance to sort out your shopping, They throw it on the conveyor belt.

    And if you want a Carrier - 9p each x 6 = alot of money I think!

In my book if you shop somewhere then you are intitled to a carrier bag or even a box or something to put it all in.

had to hand - ball it in the car again!!

    Why should you pay again?

    Take your own carrier bags.

I can't believe some of the whines people post to this forum....
