  • well, I only know as my dog was speyed just before I got her, then my mums was on wednesday - she has only been out into the garden so far (my mums dog) and only on a lead then, as she tends to jump over flower beds and tries to climb trees!

Their is a real risk of the stitches pulling, hernia and internal bleeding I believe till the stitches are out, which could be potentially really nasty.

If you google - b1tch spey exercise - there is loads of info - such as...
    http://www.oaktreevet.co.uk/Pages/leaflets/spaying%20your%20dog.htm

    http://www.wellanimalclinic.com/infosheets/spay.doc

Jumping up (such as on stairs or furniture) should be discouraged, and exercise should be limited and on lead only! Good luck

  • I am surprised the rescue didnt pass this info on to you - I wonder if it would be worth feeding back to them, as it is possible that they are unaware of the dangers, or that they assume new owners will understand that they mean 'gentle on-lead walks only' when they say it is fine to walk newly speyed dogs!!

Do not feel bad - does the dog seem ok in herself? Very probably no harm done but dogs cannot tell us how they feel, and very often they are given a 2 day pain killer in their pre-med, which may confuse their own judgement about how much they can do (as it may not hurt them).

Having had an abdominal op myself I well remember how long it took to heal well, and how careful I had to be for the first few weeks - I had a consant fear my innards may become 'outards'!! Dogs have no such understanding of what has been done to them though so are likely to be a bit reckless!!

Well I have read all the links. Thank you everyone:A

She is passing water normally (apart from her little accidents when excited but she has had one of those since this morning) and she is doing poo's normally too.

She is very excitable and wanting to run around etc which I am hoping is all sounding positive (fingers crossed) however I will only take her on a lead or in the garden for 10 minutes maximum from now on for the next couple of weeks.

She is still following me everywhere bless her. She is quite tired tonight but keeps coming for cuddles and fuss. I really hope is she alright and there is no damage done.

I do feel like the worst dog owner ever!!

  • stop feeling bad! the dog is still alive and it still likes you!!! All will be fine I am sure :-)

I am not medically trained but I believe that if the gums are nice and pink and return to pink quickly after you press on them with a finger it is a good sign! (my dogs gums are pink and black so its sometimes hard to tell!)

To keep her from getting bored you can use this time to concentrate on things that are mentally stimulating - like a bit of training - walking to heel on a lead, and basic commands etc. If you do and are giving her some of her food as training treats, reduce the main meals accordingly so she does not get podgy

Does all look ok around the scar?

    Daily update!!

Well, as most of you may have seen, I have had a major wobble about Sally last night/today.

However I have been given my reality check and am working with it now.

Getting Sally to not be active and want to go on walks is a trial!!!
She was fab again last night and actually went to sit in her bed when I was clearing up ready for bed without me saying anything....and I still had to take her out for a wee etc.

Trying to stop her from running in my garden and jumping about is funny because I am not sure SHE thinks she can do that:rotfl: She clearly loves footballs because my DS was kicking one in the garden earlier and she was scrambling to get out and play with it!! :wall: I managed to stop her though, just!!

She loves DS and cried and whimpered when he went to our house to collect something whilst I was introducing her to my neighbour. (Neighbour is going to let her out and fuss her etc when I am at work. They got on really well thankfully.

Her stitches are still fine (I am keeping my fingers crossed!!)
She refuses to do anything when she is on the lead so I worked out I take her down the road on the lead and let her come back and do her business in the garden!!

I will upload some more photos in a bit for you:D

  • She is sweet! Whlst she is in this state of enforced lead walks only you can start working on the pulling!! :-) It may be that she did walk well for her last owner but hasnt got the hang of doing it for you yet - my dog walks great for me, but tries to drag my mum along in her wake!!

Do not worry too much, it is still very early days and I bet she is really confused at the mo - give her time, space and consistent training and I am sure she will be fine!

    Update for you all.

I have had to take Sally to the vets tonight :(

Her stitches looked really red and sore and I rang for some advice and they told me to bring her in!!
The vet said because she is overweight her skin where she had the stitches is hanging down and pulling on the stitches causing them to be sore :(
He gave her an injection (can't remember what that was but know it was to make her more comfortable!!) and given me a course of anti biotics to give her everyday.
I gave her the first one wrapped in ham as suggested by the vets which is ate up.
5 minutes later she began running around really fast and I let her outside just in time for her to be sick!!!! _pale_ so not sure if that was the tablet, the injection or the car ride:confused: but the tablet stayed inside her:j (don't ask me how I know)

I also got the vet to check her for fleas because she has been scratching a bit and I saw a bug earlier:eek: he doesn't think she has them but will re check on Sunday when I take her to have her stitches out and if she has then will give her the flea treatment. NICE!!!!!!!

The vets were lovely with her and it was the same vet that did her "op" and he was great with her - however she let him touch her scar and back end and I haven't been able to do that for a week!!!

However she is settled down at my feet again and sleeping happily so hopefully caught it in time. Phew!!!
