You could try installing a 'stripped down' version of windows using nlite.
A good guide can be found here

Basically you tell it what parts of windows you want and dont want and you don't clog up your machine too much.
I have just managed to install win XP on and 8 year old laptop that was running 98 (slowly!!) and it is now a great little internet browsing laptop.
I reduced the XP CD from about 500mb to less than 150mb.

It may take a few goes to get it right - but well worth it

Thanks - I really don't want to uninstall Windows! I've updated QuickTime and Media Player and a couple of other things that looked appropriate (security fixes for XP ).

Nothing has seemed to fix the main problem though, which is the sudden freezing and having to turn the machine off. I'm kind of at a loss to know what to do about this now.

I asked you to update EVERYTHING on the windows update, as it installs any NEW drivers you may need (As well as updating internet explorer etc, ANYTHING it puts up I would advise to install). This may possibly fix the problem. Service Pack 3 should be on your computer too (is it?)
Also ~ can you do another hijack scan and post the FULL log please
And did you not stop some things from 'starting up' a while back? You could EASILY have stopped something you shouldnt have.

OK. Maybe this is because I did the updates with Firefox. Will try again with IE this evening, as they only seem to allow you to update "everything" if you use IE.

I posted the full Hijack log last time, no? At least that seemed to be all there was. Yes, I did stop some programs at startup. I kept trying to post a list, but none of the programs with an easy-to-read list let me copy them (except Hijack).

I would suggest you ALLOW all the programs again until we can figure out which CAN be stopped
THEN repost the HIJACK log (Yours seems different to everyone elses ~ perhaps try the latest version?)
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
And yes, you can only update properly through IE

OK, will try that too. Is that all including anti-virus, cleanup, adaware etc?

But only after I've re-enabled the programs disabled on startup?

OK. Had a few problems with the Microsoft site, but I think I have installed all available updates. I have enabled everything on the - it has just taken a full 12 minutes from power on to be able to write this! So hope to zap most of these startup progrmas again v soon ! And (new?) version of Hijack This - hope this what you need:
